    Khal Drogo fan art

    Hi everyone!

I did this for the Game of Thrones tumblr fan art site (have not submitted yet).
It started with a sketch from reference and I made some minor additions.
Likeness wasnīt that important to me, I didnīt want to follow the reference exactly. Iīm considering this one pretty much done but will definantly change if anything is off.

    Thanks!

I like the face and torso; I think it represents him well. I have to say the color choice is interesting.. I never took Drogo for a pink kind of guy, but I think it's nice.

There are just a couple of things bugging me about it. I find the unfinished beard kind of distracting (I'm not really sure why you left that area blank). The shape of the hair on the head seems a little weird to me, like the hairline is a bit high (unless he's balding?) and it feels caved in at the back, like his cranium is a tad small. I find the hands kind of weird, in terms of proportion and pose. The one closer to us looks too big for him, and the one further away looks too small. And I just don't really get what they're doing - it looks like he's flicking his finger..? I would personally remove that back hand altogether; I don't think it's adding anything. And maybe consider putting something in the front hand (a weapon for example). Maybe that's just me though. Oh and the elbow seems a little high to me.

Cool piece though, I really like it so far

    Update:

dierat: Thanks! I fixed the hair and the elbow and I agree. Itīs much better now. As for the hands and weapon Iīm going to leave it like that I actually donīt see the size problem and I like the added mystery with the hand.
The hand should be ruffly the size of your face and itīs also further back in the image.

    Thanks for your critique!

It's not really a critique of the artwork itself, but I can't help but notice that he doesn't have a single bell in his hair.

His right hand looks much smaller than his left hand. Otherwise well done!

It looks like you were so involved with all the color, texture, and designy stuff, that it's completely irrelevant that it's a picture of Drogo. In fact, the picture wouldn't lose anything, and would probably be stronger, if it were somebody else.

MisterBoo: Iīm not sure what you mean. Whatīs a bell?
    Bertling: Thanks!
Elwell: Yes, I think you are right. It became an experiment in style and technique the more I worked on it.

Anyway, I will post the final version. Thanks for you comments and critique! I will try to improve on my next work.

For your viewing pleasure, not one but two bells! Drogo was described in the book as having a bunch of tiny little bells hung in his braid that jingled when he walked. (It was a symbol of his martial achievements along with the braid that had never been cut.)

I understand you're probably not going to change it at this point, but I wanted to clarify on the hands issue for future reference. It's not the length of the hands that's causing a discrepancy but the width. It looks to me like you either referenced the hands from two different individuals, or you bulked up the lower hand to make him appear manlier but didn't alter the upper hand.

Ah, didnīt know he had them in his hair. I didnīt read the books
You are totally right about the hands, didnīt see that or even think about it. The lower one is referenced from an MMA fighter. The upper one, slightly elongated, is my own Haha!
