From the NY Times via IO9:

""This guy was very eccentric," the co-worker said. "He was so detail-oriented. If he had a free minute, he would start doing origami. The things that came out of his mind were so original and creative, you knew that his mind didn't work the same way as normal people. But you worked with the guy so long, that you just chalked it up to Jeff being Jeff."

This morning, a report in the New York Times shed more light on Jeffrey T. Johnson, the man authorities say shot and killed his former boss near the Empire State Building Friday before he was gunned down by police. Nine others were injured by police bullets."

Jeezus! The lawsuits are gonna be monumental!

[Also: from a Ringling grad, VK's attached work doesn't exactly put that school in a good light-- seems like a $100K+ education should do you a bit better. . .]

You know who else was a [car] design student at an expensive school who went on to cause dreadful misery? No not me, John Malkovic' plastic gun-wielding nutter in In The Line of Fire.
Theres a shot of him early on in the clay room at Art Centre pretending to work on some 3rd years quarter scale clay. I think. Or the investigators go there. In any case we're a bad bunch..

The vehicles look pretty okay. I have to say though that this one is super weird:

The strange art of the Empire State shooter

It looks like a ship wrapped in fishing line being attacked (or possibly flashed) by a pink giant.

    Well. . .

Ya know, VK, here we have a unemployed 56 year old "loner" with a female alter ego who produces kinda sorta gay imagery who gunned down a bullying alpha-male salesman who the NYT went outta the way to indicate "had a girlfriend."

Given the potential gay bullying politics--interfering with a screed on "gun violence"-- this goes down the Memory Hole in a day or two. . .

Funny little man. It sounded like he was cross because the guy couldnt sell his shitty art work. And splashed his brain across a wall to make him sorry. I pity America and how it equates owning a projectile weapon with freedom, no matter how many little kids get shot in the face and stomach in movie cinemas. Just get rid of all the guns, fuckheads.

With the Batman shooter, we had extensive personal details inside of 24 hours. Here? I'm guessing the Media has most of that stuff, BUT it doesn't "fit the dialogue."

Yep lets drag up the dudes art which has no relation to what he actually did, which by the way was maybe something he like to just do for the heck of it. And lets all mock him on the forums.

Way to keep it classy guys..

Also I don't really get why this is soo "strange" ...girls, cars and jets..... isnt that what basically every guy wants to draw, is that not like what we do here ...checks website name ^^^

Why cant we mock the prick?
Bringing his art in is pretty relevant given he finally lost it with the guy with the unfortunate and impossible task of selling his shit art?

Ahh I just heard he got pissed off at some dude and wanted to take his anger out on him. I never heard that dude had to sell his stuff.

Still there are people here not as skilled as he was, as of right now. Their are people just starting out probably not even have as decent. I don't think we should really mock some dudes work, even though dude lost his shit and went nuts, I mean think of If he had found a community which supported him when he was starting out.

Artist requests "suicide by cop" by pointing .45 at NYPD-- they oblige but botch the job badly and shoot 9 innocent civilians-- three of them are injured pretty seriously.

VK mocks the shooter's art. And, I speculate wildly about why the media hasn't given us as much info as on other shooters.

    Demo is sad.

Assorted mods think the shooter's art is shit anyway.

    That's about it. . .

They guy stalks and shoots somebody in cold blood, then goads the cops into shooting him on a crowded midtown street, resulting in the stupid, unnecessary injury of seven other people, and you're upset because people are making fun of his shitty art?

Kinda reminds me of those really bad murals in parts of Downtown LA where guys are trying to sell furniture.

You'd see a bad wall mural of kitchen appliances and a woman in a bikini

I don't think anythings wrong with me, but I think if we threw out the fact that he shot people then there's really no reason to have any issue with the art.

Again throw out the fact he shot people... now look at the art, not really much different then whats created by pretty much any new comer here.

What a fuckin car and a chick, go into the sketch books and start telling everyone whose drawing those poorley how the're shit, judge the dude on his actions yeah hes scum, but judging him by just the work.... I don't exactly see a difference from him to anyone else here.

Yeah he's trying to sell this its not great he went nuts, he should probably be better if he went to Ringling and wants to make a living, but I kind of just pitty the dude failed hard at something he wanted to do..destroyed his life and tons of others.

THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT HE'S A FUCKING MURDERER. YOU CAN'T "THROW THAT OUT."

Despite the insinuations of some posts here, I haven't seen any indication that this guy's art had anything to do with the shooting. From everything reported so far, it seems completely irrelevant. I don't think you can read any sort of psychological warning signs etc from it. Still, it makes me happy that his work sucks, because then I don't have even the slightest reason to feel sympathy for him.

OK OK, I'm not disagreeing with you. I think its just interesting that we get forums all the time where dudes a douch but has decent work, or dudes really nice but work sucks. and its discussed whether you should link personality with their work.

    Uhh.

They're mocking the art of a murderer.

No one is mocking the art of a newcomer who asks for help.
Worst of CA are for people who can't be assed for help and think their shit is the greatest.

    Uggh..

I didn't think it was this difficult to explain....

A I'm pissed off its mocking... really is there nothing better to do. He killed people hes scum.. why do we care

I get why the worst of Ca is around.. it should be... why is this being brought up did this dude come in with a huge ego talking a big game, if so please mock away..

I feel bad for the people wounded and shot for no reason, pissed at the cops, and the guy is scum but for some reason I think we should understand a little of what happened here and feel pitty...

Dude wants to draw cars and chicks for a living, went to an expensive school, has no luck selling any of his work, works not great in any distinguishable way, sounds like hes a loner. In the end it all went disastrous and dude takes out all his anger and frustration on his boss. I mean trying to work in the field as little as I do while in school is difficult and taxing enough, I just now am understanding the rainbow of stress it can be, I would never go pull a .45 on my boss... I can see how stress can get to people, hard times, hard job, bad social life

You seem to be showing more identification with and sympathy for a murderer as a fellow artist than for his victim as a fellow human being. That's why I asked what was wrong with you.

I think this is way many artists don't reach their full potential, however limited it might be. As a viewer and as an artist, one has the right to criticize these kinds of works. This doesn't mean he should stop trying to improve but rather that his art is not very good, it lacks warmth and breadth. I personally think it's harsh to the eye and when I do stuff like that, I would like for people to tell me. But if he truly loved art, he would have moved on and continued learning. I'm not saying that I trade my views for others' but criticizing and learning from critiques is a part of the process. Also, he went to an art school so he should know better than to just throw random objects into the environment to make it look cooler. He might be a good artist but these pictures sure don't show it.

Because i can understand the frustration and the stress. I see this guy as a person with really bad choices, I don't see him as JUST a monster.. I don't pretend the the world is as binary as that I guess that to you may seem messed up.

I think this is a pretty good lesson to learn. learn how to be really good at what you do work hard and make your self desired. or else your life is gona go to shit for you and people around you.

I can Identify because THIS IS THE PERSPECTIVE MOST of us would have we are also artist. and that's the extent to which i identify. You seem to be making the conclusion that I am identifying with him as the killer which, I cant, i also cant really identify with the victims I haven't been held at gunpoint or shot. Were all human so that doesn't help understand any specific side the killer was human.. and this was brought on by human emotions... or was he some 3 eyed slime monster.

Also drop the hateful attitude. Is that the first place you go when someone shares a different view. I mean honestly man "whats wrong with you" ?? Not really much I'm trying to understand what all lead an artist to throw his life away, cause i don't want to do the same.

I fail to see how the shooting has anything whatever to do with this guy "as an artist" or his artistic development/failure/etc. And I don't see that this guy is someone whose life was especially tragic, any more than anyone else's life in this day and age. I see an average loser schmuck whose solution for dealing with average problems is to go kill somebody. Sorry, I can't sympathise with that.

I can sympathise way more with the people who got shot because in this city that's a definite possibility for anyone, anytime, and it's a fear that's always lurking somewhere in the back of our minds... Even more so now, obviously.
