    Apa's pursuit of beauty

    hello everybody!

This is my first post/thread in the forum. I hope my staying here will help me improve my skills and reach my goals. With your blessings of course!

So, let me start from the beginning. I'm 20 and I study architecture in Greece. I have been drawing and sketching since I can remember myself. Imagination and conceptual scenes were never my strong point. It seems that I just had a good understanding of space and forms thus my sketches always seemed, let's say, close to reality. As years went by, I started to develop a special interest in industrial design and especially car design, hoping I could follow a career in the future. These thoughts (and many others) led to me to the decision to study architecture as I could happily combine art with science. During the last year, I must admit that my passion for cars and industrial products has started abandoning me and a love for the pure beauty of art is taking its place. Although I'm now working as a columnist and sketcher in an online car magazine and website, I no longer can see myself as a professional in these fields.

And here is where art and technique comes in place. I feel that these two years in architecture school has had a great influence in the style I sketch. You know, what we care about there, is a rough sketch, a mere concept. No details, no shades, no nothing. Just lines and strokes. Sketching is just a tool. And I feel that I have really changed towards this direction. I don't know if it's a good or bad thing. It just happened. It also has led me to drawing almost entirely with black pen. No pencil, no eraser, no gray tones. You draw a line and it stays there forever, completely black as it is. No room for mistakes. Or better, you must learn to use your mistakes to your advantage and benefit from them. But this whole new technique scares me. I feel like I can't draw in a different way anymore. And I just compromise with what architecture demands. And I know you will tell me that everyone has a style, a trademark (let's say) and that there is nothing wrong with that. But I believe it's too early to claim a style and get sentenced to it.

At present, I am trying to expand my themes and my techniques. Also, I am trying to practice in human figures, thus I am studying some human anatomy. Generally, I am determined to reach a level where I will be able to compose my own imaginary scenes and then depict them successfully. I really have no idea where this will lead (I mean professionally) but I want to get better and better.

So, here I am in this forum ready to read your critiques, your tips and advice. Thank you all in advance guys! And I'm sorry for the long post...

I've been feeling guilty for not sketching with pencil anymore.. So, during the last 2 weeks I've been practicing the art of pencil sketching..

LOVE the way you are drawing trees! Reminds me of retro architecture styles from the late 50s early 60s!

Nature is not my strong point, so far..But I hope I will improve. Yes, I know, this mushroom study is not the most common amongst studies. But it was quite fun..

Σας ευχαριστώ πολύ παιδιά! Είναι πάντα ωραίο να βρίσκεις συμπατριώτες σ' έναν "ξένο τόπο"!

The first sketch is a 'Venus Comb Murex', a large predatory sea snail that lives in Indo-Pacific waters.
The second one shows Professor Flavios.

Inspired by the form of an extraordinary sea shell, called Venus Comb and by the mood and atmosphere of the tower of Barad Dur.
