Thanks Andrew, that was extremely interesting. One of those things that is so novel, you wonder why you didn't think of it. I only have one issue though. At the end, the SF author thinks an anthropomorphic faun, almost a satyr-like (although more teddy bear-like) creature, would be the ideal messenger between unsuspecting earthlings and a 'fearsome' aliean race that resides in the valley. I think that in realty, if we came across a crazy teddybear talking singing thing, we'd be freaked out. I think that it would have to be either *very* human in appearance so that it was perceived as a human with special 'powers,' or else like some jetson's type robot that looks only vaguely human, maybe only bipedal at best, so that it was percieved as an advanced machine. A 'monster', even a cute one, would still have the shock effect of being a monster.
