Angry Pros & cons of headphones in an art studio?

    Hi,

The company I work for has recently introduced a blanket ban on headphones, including in the art department.

Personally I'm failing to see the rationale behind this from a creative perspective; The music and podcasts I listen to on a daily basis provide inspiration, education, entertainment and block out the usual office noises that distract me from doing my job as an artist.

I'm struggling to see the benefits of such a rule so thought I would come on here to get some of your educated opinions.

So what are the pros and cons of letting artists and designers use headphones in the office? Is this rule more commonplace than I realised?

    Cheers

    Shane

Someone important comes in, starts talking, after a while they notice it's only the person they're talking to that's paying any attention. Feels foolish at the lack of an assumed audience. Bans all headphones. True? Maybe, maybe not but it's a rumour.

This kinda makes me think there has been an incident in some other department which created a rule that's just enforced equally. Like if you have another department where people mostly do not use headphones or can't listen music because of their job, having one guy there that's listening music loudly with his headphones is likely to eventually grate lots of nerves. Overall I don't think the person who made the rule was really thinking about artists.

There's already been lots of pros and cons threads about listening to music while drawing, and I'd say this extends to that. I guess you better just get a radio in the art department and find a channel that everyone agrees with.

Sounds like a bullshit rule to me. But bullshit rules are par for the course in a corporate environment

"Yeah we don't want that liability"

Well it is a sucky rule would not be surprised it was a combination of rules being applied unfairly amongst staff....liabilities and other corporate settings. And from a company's position it's not gonna be easy to explain to HR why one department can work under circumstances differently than another group in that office.

That is quite understandable, especially when it is accompanied by an order to wear ball gags...

Bummer. That's a dumb rule, but you're free to quit (I assume). Sounds like it's a buyer's market for artists and art. I work in a different field and they supply us with expensive headphones on request.

the funny thing is you do a lot better work for them to sell with if you're allowed to listen to music and eat and not sit there wishing their children would go on fire. theyre screwing themselves.
    and you.
i like working at night smoking a big blunt and listening to banging house, its just easier to concentrate. send your stuff at 8am, set your skype to 'in a meeting' and go to sleep. thats just me. and the people I work with. Freelancing, its not for everyone.

I guess when they find that that artists without headphones never shut up, they'll lift the ban. Especially if you sit next to technical people, it will drive them nuts.

Bring in a boom box and blast it without headphones...

    Or whistle while you work.

People will be begging for headphones in no time.

    (Man, I love freelancing.)

I usually keep one ear free to hear what's going on and join in conversation. When you wear headphones, you're prone to isolate yourself which isn't bad in certain situation, but it's not great for bonding or team work. I guess your boss is just taking it to an extreme?

This. Although I guess they can also put a ban of talking to anyone except the superiors, and soon enough you have someone who is responsible to relay important messages between workers since they cannot be trusted to keep talk to a minimum.

Ironically, when I worked in a studio it was the loudmouth programmers who drove me to headphones...

If they weren't standing behind me discussing hash tables, they were standing behind me repeating South Park and Monty Python skits verbatim. It was either wear headphones or start throwing things. Sometimes I did both.

If only life was that simple! I agree, companies are free to enforce the rules they deem appropriate, but personally I believe this particular rule is counterproductive to creativity in this case.

I'd figure they mean if you can't see any cons with headphones (as you don't see any pros to the rule), it's possible that you were unwittingly/without noticing doing something (for example, starting to sing while wearing them, or not noticing people, listening too loud etc) that caused the rule to be created.
Like, I personally loooooaathe when people hum while listening music with headphones so I made sure to force myself to not do the same. However if I myself weren't irritated by humming, it's likely I too would hum, which could irritate others.

I'm totally the same! But there's a fair few of us that it affects so I don't think that's the reason. I think it's just another case of non-creatives not seeing things from our perspective.

I'm sorry, but there is no consensus on "how creative people work" while I understand it's a sucky rule people don't start playing the Sneetches game.

I've been able to draw without music and actually prefer doing so when I start with the beginning stages of working on something.

I do prefer having music once I have my idea planned out. However, I can do both now because I tried drawing with and without music.

Now when I'm sketching on the bus or certain locations, headphones are on because I don't want to be bothered with inane questions.

I can live without the headphones, but I do prefer them. When I draw it's something I like doing even if the outcome is frustrating at times.

I've always got music playing in my head.

    Yep.

Or the children who insist on screaming continuously right under the window. Or the idiot ranting on the stoop opposite for hours. Or the ice cream trucks playing "Pop Goes the Weasel" on repeat. Or the idiot girls downstairs throwing dishes around and babbling inanely at the top of their lungs at this very moment MUST. NOT. KILL. Okay, headphones on NOW. Music START.

    Aaaaaahhhh.... better.

One side of earplugs are a good way sneaking around the ban, just don't get caught.

Or, just start singing something catchy so everyone suffers with you.
