    ROUND #271, WARP STEED!

    topic:

    ROUND#271, WARP STEED!

I'm feeling like genre bending on this one. think 50's sci-fi, and westerns.

In the future the universe is protected by the galactic sheriffs department.

the way they are able to reach across the huge distances to stop and take care of galactic criminals is by their trusty steeds. WARP STEEDS!

your job this week is to design a creature that can be mounted by a man (or humanoid, we are dealing with sci-fi here) and transport its rider across the universe in a very short period of time using some kind of natural warping ability. the way it warps is up to you.

    Requirements this week.

    - the creature must be able to carry a humanoid.

    - the creature must be able to warp across the universe in some way.

    - remember not to use existing animals. try to avoid being too much like horses.

    Deadline:

    August 22nd, 7:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

This is my initial impression of where I want to go with the design this week...
It's basically an avian/reptilian based alien creature with clawed suction-cup feet and a long tail with a fan end like a kite. It can walk and fly like one would expect, but has an enlarged pineal gland which allows it to bend space-time, effectively allowing it to travel at faster than light speeds when it wants to. It is carying a 2-headed alien galactic sheriff bareback with just a bit and reins.
I am certainly open to design suggestions at this point.

That's something you don't read about everyday. Sounds awesome.

going for a triceratops head dolphin thing. l am using the idea that its crest protects the rider from the harshness of space.

Figured I'd have a go at this one. Wanted to do something 80s saturday morning cartoon-like. Just getting some basic colour-stuff and comp. done...

The word ‘anarchy’ comes from the ancient Greek αναρχία in which αν meant ‘without’ and αρχία meant first a military ‘leader’ and then ‘ruler’. Anarchist society is one ‘without rulers’: a classless, non-hierarchical society.

    Si_Sweeeeeeet -

lkgdingsbums - reminds me of the speeders that the "bad guys" of the tv-series "saber rider and the star sherrifs" use - just like an organic version. looks cool!

I'm writing this down so I don't forget it.

Basically what I've come up with is that there are these colonies that are built on a set of planets within the same solar system and that these planets are indirectly connected by some type of rift energy that occurs as natural, unstable elements on each planet. The colonies have managed to harness this energy and with advanced technology, build portals to travel in between, no matter what planet they're on.

The creatures, who have been exposed to this energy for milions of years, have developed a natural ability to travel through these rifts and have proven to be excellent for fast travel through the various terrain found on each planet.

Polished the grey scale, added a background and some base color.
I'm thinking that maybe it needs a set of folded wings or something that helps explain how it moves with in the warp trail.

    Warp Steed- Firefly blob

So I figured something that is going through space, carry somebody, and land somwhere should be able to meet certain characteristics.

    1) Had to be able to withstand extreme conditions such as temperature and the vacuum of space. Perhaps even Items such as asteroids or other debris. -- My answer for that was to compose him of a jellyfish/ squid like skin. Both animals endure extreme pressures and temperatures on earth, it stands to reason that some weird space creature would be more similar in appearance to them than that of a horse. While I'm still debating a mouth, his over-sized tongue allowed for a comical face shield for debris and heat on reentry. It also fits the texture of the rest of him.

    2) obviously it had to be able to carry a guy, but putting a saddle on him not only seemed against the rules for COW but added zero personality. -- after already coming to the conclusion that its skin was a boneless blob, it made sense that there might be a pouch or something to sit in. Maybe it can hold its breath for a really long time and this is like a blow hole. itseals up in space and opens once on an oxygen rich planet.

    3) Had to be friendly and 100% obedient (stupid) after all you're guiding him though space. -- So, I'm still debating his mouth, but it certainly gave him the feel of a dumb dog.

    4) had to be able to land.--needs legs. I decided it should be 6 or more because...
    5) Had to give him propulsion.-- I thought "what animal looks like it has a rocket in it?" the answer was a firefly (Thus 6 or more legs in #4). I basically have some kind of biological rocket in his butt.

    Thoughts?

    Yeee Haaarrrrrr

    Hi peeps,

I went with an alien flying species that has evolved to handle space travel with the warp ability. The ability is activated by a chemical reaction in special glands within the thorax of the creature.

The thorax also features a natural exhaust mechanism to safely expel the toxic gases created as part of this process.

u aren´t but now that u say it, i´ll give it a try if that´s faster:
lkjhgfdsa lkjhgfdsa lkjhgfdsa lkjhgfdsa lkjhgfdsa lkjhgfdsa - yah, definetely faster

i think it´d look better if the rider would be somewhat smaller btw.

I just wanted to see what it looked like if I cut out the mouth from my creature and push it toward the squid inspiration a bit more.

Would anyone care to throw out their opinion on which version is better?

razwit - You described the creature as a dumb dog, and since the eyes are of a very cartoonish nature, I'd say the mouth complements that look much better.
Try to clean it up a bit. Right now it looks too busy. The eyes look great, though. Keep it up.

Wip update. Added tale feathers, kind of like a peacock. Added texture and some highlights. Will add more details to the background to give off the impression of speed.

    Crits are welcome.

    Okay

All right... so I'm gonna try this one out. After several iterations of thumbs, I settled on this one... I like the sort of stocky quality of it. I'll post more as the design progresses.

Oh well crap, I didn't realize it was due later today, maybe I'll sit this one out lol I still have a ways to go before truly being able to render imaginary things. I'll go back to practicing... one day I'll make something worthy though! Anyhow, here is the WIP... kinda muddy.

Prometheus the deadline is not until the 22nd, you have a day to get it down!

I hope, because mines not done yet either. Think I'm gonna swap the riders gun for a lasso, ha.

guys, you all have read the description i guess - i am wondering how a lot of the designed creatures are supposed to travel accross universe. Some "just" have legs and no cockpit or some sort of support for the rider. Are they supposed to jump from planet to planet with one gigantic leap? riders will be crunched in space.

just mentioning this since i love logical designs.

ninety9: I felt the same way, but rememnber, sometimes we just might have to suspend reality to do an entry. Plus, the theme references the sort of pulp 1950s scifi/space feel, which by definition almost ignores logical or realitstic science. Part of COW is having fun trying to create an explanation of how these things work... some of them are flat out physically impossible, but it's all about presentation. For example, though I can't finish mine, I was gonna call it a Spaceripper. The "horn" on its head had the ability to pierce the fabric of space and time, thus allowing the rider/pilot to warp around. Pretty ridiculous in terms of real science, but acceptable within the rules of the contest. You mighr have a job as a concept artist where they task you with creating unbelievable things, but part of the fun is trying to make it work

Sunseaker: lol thank you, but I know I can't finish it well enough within the time. I may revisit the idea when I'm more skilled. I really like how yours looks so far... and a lasso would be pretty cool lol
