Character of the Week #299
Design the ghostly members of the royal court!!
DEADLINE: SUNDAY 19th August 8PM GMT+1 (9PM British Summer Time)
Check your timezone!
We're getting really close to the big one now so we've extended this week to a two week challenge.
The most important thing a monarch needs is a royal court, so this challenge is all about creating the court of the next king or queen. However, this court has one very special rule: All of it's member have died serving the realm.
Each courtier is forever in the state at which they died (EG: Drowned=perpetually wet / shot with a cannon=cannon shaped hole in body)
You need to show that the courtiers are dead, how they died, and what role they actually serve in the court (Jester, Handmaiden, Guard, Nobleman etc)
As this is a two week challenge, you are welcome to design more than one courtier, as long as they are all presented in a single final image.
- Can be male of female
- Must be clearly dead/ a ghost
- Must show how they died
- Must show their role within the court
- Can be more than one, but must be presented in the same final image
In addition to the brief, if you do not follow these rules, you will not be included in the poll.
- Files must be named: CHoW#299_Username (Files with any other names such as final.jpg or even chow299final.jpg will not be accepted)
- Finals must be posted in the finals thread BEFORE the deadline
- Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
- At least 3/4 of the focus character must be visible
- Final images must be accompanied with a basic character sheet in a separate image Character sheets should at the very least show a sketch of the front and back of the character and a couple of early thumbnails/silhouettes.
- Follow the brief!
Would a zombiefied courtier work?
-grins- First thing that popped into my head was the idea of the ghost princes from Stardust:
I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way...
My thought exactly when I read the brief.. XD
Eitherway this will be an interesting challenge.
This'll be both my first ChOW entry and my first post here, so just a quick "Hello!"
Decided to go with perhaps a less revered member of the court; the Falconer. His staff (which I intend on modifying substantially) is made of the taxidermized corpse of the poisonous Indian Cobra (avenged by his trusted Falcon companion) that poisoned him and ultimately took his life.

I was thinking of joining this contest this week. I wonder if it has to be the royal court though? Would it be okay if I went with the imperial court? same thing, just not the court of a king, but a court of an emperor.
I'm gonna start by just working on these 2 maids who were beheaded by decree of the queen. She didn't enjoy how the king "treated" them.(wink, wink)
I'll work on these some more later and redo their outfits I'm not sure but I kinda make them cute beheaded maids....(I'm weird >.<)
Im glad this one is 2 weeks. Maybe I can actually finish this time. The last few weeks have been nothing but busy busy busy!
So here is an idea I will be working with.
really nice nice, i think i will pick a wizard counselour of the court, that died in a magic duel, i dont really know how at the moment but i will think it trough, looking forward to see amazing entries.
the title remenbered i dont know why, of when the jedis appear at the end of star wars episode 6 the return of the jedy, and obi wan spirit appearing to luke hehe
Good afternoon all. Great start so far. Interesting how people would interpret the "ghost" part of this challenge.
Knowing he was on his last legs, the brilliant general Konrad von Ulthgur led the charge through the broken gates of a rebel city into a cauldron of burning pitch and molten lead poured from numerous murder holes. The sight of the burning general picking himself up and leading the rest of the heavy infantry broke the defenders and moral of the city.
Nicknamed 'Old Smoky' (from a discrete distance) the general strode back to the undying court to challenge and take the position of Grand General, his fearsome visage, unnatural vigor combined with his talent for strategy have made him a hellish opponent to those who would challenge the monarchy.
Main character is ghost of the dead queen, followed by her ghostly servants. They were killed by mad queens poleaxe in her hysterical rage spasm. She was nuts and kept killing people all the time, so people hung her. I will draw rope around her neck later...
Spellsword95: Cool premise and I like what you got so far. I think glowing eyes and a visible grin would completely change the mystery/horror factor you already got going. A subtle glow from a rope could be a nice touch though.
Added glowing eyes and hanging rope. Now I have to figure out how to do more ghostly look. Maybe add some glowing aura or make her half-transparent with something solid in background...
I am very satisfied with result. In past few days I have improved my drawing techniques. Painting image like this in one evening is monumental success for me. It would take a couple of days before.
Beetle Juice waiting room scene is the first thing I thought of.
Nice Beautiful and morbid at the same time. Keep on render it out.
I like it. She looks scary. At this point the crown looks a bit unfinished. Also I think you can push the rendering more. The axe and the cloths looks a to have the same surface structure. I think a good idea is to look at some black and white photos to get the shininess in the ax and the softness in the textile
Very nice character. I also like the colors. I think the cup and her face tells the story. Maybe her arms looks a bit long.
ha very cool topic! i cant wait to see the next round! each 100th chow is always a biggie!
heres just a sketch, not sure if ill have time to finish, and still havent figured an outfit yet, but he is (was) a court scribe, who was killed (not sure how yet), for doodling when he was supposed to be taking notes...
Great ideas are flowing around here ppl. Here´s my ghostly painter, i hope it fits into the topic.
General Fastino led a failed summer campaign against
the tree people of Greenmoon..a court he is often asked
how he lost his lifeforce...he says he can't remember..
because of this memory loss.. he is regarded as witty...
he is the official Court Humormonger...
