    ROUND #267 - D&D Variants Round 2/3

Dungeons & Dragons is home to a myriad of monsters pulled from myth and folklore and a few of it’s own creation. Flipping through volume upon volume of monsters for players to confront there are always a few that stick out. Monsters we consider “classics” in the context of D&D. Last summer we did a series of rounds all focused on the central theme of familiars. This year we’re going to be taking classic monsters of the D&D universe, and giving them a little twist. Again, there will be three rounds, three D&D monsters and three twists given to them.

    topic:

    Undead Displacer Beast

The displacer beast, in D&D, has long been the bane of the low-level adventurer. Usually the creature is depicted as a slender feline-like creature, blue-black or purple, and with two long tentacles emerging from it’s shoulder blades. These alien creatures surround themselves with an eerie glimmer that makes it hard to pin down it’s exact location and movements. Your task this week is to design a creature, recognizable as a displacer beast, but in all ways undead. It’s your choice whether you choose the route of the zombified, skeletal, ghostly or a bit of all three, so long as it’s (not safe to call) dead.

    Wiki info:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Displacer_beast

    Requirements this week:
    - Your creature’s general form should be reminiscent of felines.

    - Your creature should have two (or more) tentacles emerging from it’s back.

    - Your creature must be undead.

    - Your creature should be interpretable as the D&D monster: the displacer beast.

    Deadline:

    August 8th, 7:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

    P. 129 of the book "Libris Mortis" might give someone inspiration, maybe.

Ok, so here's my take on the undead displacer beast. .
although it's probably not undead enough...any thoughts?

    ... and some colors.

    *I don't know what I'm doing*

Mmm. it does not at all say undead to me.
Also, I kind of feel like it's too generic, too much regular feline.
Also there's hardly any depth in the image.
I would not say it sucks monkeyballs however. Just...mixed feelings about it.

    Hey Harmageddon,
i often don´t know what i am doing myself, but i would suggest placeing a lightsource that lights the beast.
That way you can model its muscles and features which will give it some depth and define its shapes.
If you think the creature looks too regular you could change its shape a little,
like holes where the rotten flesh felt off. Maybe show some more bones.
Two things that make the beast look "living" for me: the fresh pink nose and the eyes.

    Keep at it man!

    that's completely fine man!
Just get the work done and gain some pen mileage y'know?
And as long as you learn eventually, look up Gourney for color, I mean there is an endless amount of resources.
there isn't much contrast on your beast and darkening areas and making other areas lighter would help. also develope the ground it is standing on, and leave the other B/G less detailed. try and bring out a focal point. just look at your entry from far away and see what you like and don't like.
But I like this, it's got heart. Keep it up dude just keep trying and learning.

Little facetoid about Displacer Beasts is that they are always 3 feet 'displaced' from where normal eyes see them. It is damn near impossible to hit one, let alone kill it.

Beholders and Displacer eh CA.org?... alright CA.org..... alllriiightt

here's one of the sketches l've done so far. gonna make that back bit a shredded coat, cause having a simple skeleton seems a bit cliche. not 100% on it. any ideas?

:EDIT: changed a few things around, still not too sure what to do with its ass, having a peeled back coat didn't fit in too well with the front.

Went for something different with the forelimbs, making them work like praying mantis, i dunno, seems cool in a sort of 'l'mma assassin bro!' sorta way

Rob Powell, actually it is round 269. I messed up with the counting about 7 rounds ago, so our "round ending in '66" tradition was actually on round '67 since I messed up and we had 2 round of 262. I'm correcting the numbers now, to account for that.

Ink doodle I threw together this afternoon! I don't know if I'll take it much farther than this. Didn't really add anything new to the concept, besides those Thylacosmilus-type tooth flanges. 'Twas fun!

Rob Powell: great recources and cool sketch, now make it awesome
Sporus: thanks dude, I'll keep it in mind.
PlasmaErnst: thanks dude! Lightsources are killing me!
But I'll see if I can incorporate some.

update: I changed the eye, some contrast, some more bare flesh...
I just realized a displacer beast actually has a double set of front legs, instead of mine, which has a double set of hindlegs.. lol. Maybe I'll fix that. Dunno yet.

I'll crit/comment tomorrow. Have at it, people!
