Petals Around the Rose: A famous puzzle.

I came across this today and found it very interesting. The puzzle has a history with Bill Gates and some other famous people. It took me a couple of minutes to solve it but I finally got it.

No, trust me, you're too smart to figure it out. It's a lot more stupid than you're trying to make it.

That took quite a few rolls to figure out. I was just about to give up when looked at the problem in the right way.

I remember seeing this for the first time a while ago. But, yeah, you do kind of feel dumb after figuring it out.

it took me half my lunch break to figure it out. One hint that's mentioned in the background is that it was traditionally played with real dice (not 5 digital dice locked in a row).

Piece of cake. I stared at it for a little bit, trying to find some complex pattern or somethin, but in the end I figured they were just doing some BS fakeout, and the answer was childishly simple, so I got it right!

Hate puzzles like that, they fool you into thinking hard, and then let you down with a mindnumbingly simple solution.

I like how it took the guy a year to get it, and then he says "well...it takes smarter people longer"

    sure buddy
Not smarter, but I started to solve it like a complex puzzle, so if you have someone who only tries to solve it that way, then they could be geniuses, but if they don't think in a variety of ways, then they are screwed. I guess if you solve it fast you are either a simpleton, or you are smart and can think in a variety of ways.

i was pretty much just paraphrasing what was said in the blurb. This is exactly what appears in there

It had taken Dr. Duke well over a year himself, and he would always explain that the smarter you were, the longer it took to figure it out.
which is kinda silly. It's also silly that they say it takes basic 'math', which also kinda fakes you out. there's not really any math involved. sorry if that was a hint...or was it...

Yes, there is basic math involved. Addition...

Basic as it gets and I still couldn't figure it out.

Best hint out there that STILL didn't help me until I was TOLD how it worked (dammit) is:

Petals around the Rose. How many Roses, exactly, does this statement imply? One? ... or *more*. Hmmmmm?

Well technically, even if you can't add, but can count to 20 you would be able to get it.
