    Little help with oil painting

Hello all! I don't know if this is the best place, neither if there's already a topic about it... but well, let's go.

I would like to learn a bit about oil painting. I know NOTHING of the technical part.... like, how to start, what to use, etc.

What I want to know is, as a starter and a student, what should I buy? What brushes? Should I buy canvas with fabric or an special paper (I've read something about gesso... don't know if it is for oil or otherstuff)... How many colors? What colors? (I know I should buy few colors). Or I just go to the store and OMG WHAT A GORGEOUS RED, I CHOSE YOU!?

As you can see, I really know nothing... Hope this isn't some dumb question, and thanks!

    Some links via google-fu:

Any decent library should have a plethora of good books for
someone beginning with oils. I'd actually recommend having the books
on hand when starting from scratch.

Signing up for an evening adult class would also be a good option.

EDIT: Check out this area of the forums as well:

(Sometimes I forget about google, silly me)

Thanks for those guides, I'm reading them, and they're really helpful!

Actually, I was looking for a painting class in my town, but couldn't find one yet (in my free time), but I'll start looking for some books =) Thanks again!

You're welcome. I was not trying to imply you were being lazy in
your search, but that's quite a bit of practical info which is freely available.
I tried to find sites that I felt had some good tips.

Browse the art discussion and fine art posts. Many of our maestros here
have links in their signatures to their own blogs and websites which
    contain useful info and tips.

For a mixture of practical advice ranging from beginner to pro, have fun

No no! I didn't though that you was implying something! I really forgot about it haha! And I looked at the fine arts posts, but I'll look again with more attention to search for more tips and links! And thanks again, for the last link!
