    Luther Taylor's Sketchbook

    Hello denizens of CA
I'm Luther, recently turned 23, male from England, London.
stop me if this sounds like a song already sung - I've known of this site for a while, but never had the desire to join up until recently.
I've been drawing everyday desperate to improve my freehand drawing since the beginning of this year but my efforts have continuously been rising.
admittedly, I started off quite lazy, but since June, I have noticed I have been getting more intense as if I am getting consumed. my life as I once
knew it as is definitely gone.

my method of main improvement is repetition of something i like to call memory recall.
it is just simply a matter of studying a subject and attempting to recall the general details immediately from imagination, after which i then experiment with said subject in different situations.

Before, at the beginning of this year, I was concerned with improving my digital painting so set off trying to learn colour and how different light situations affects it.

I use to do a lot of digital paint studies, but nowadays I do not even touch digipaint as much as I use to.
I am first set on competency with the pencil and rendering scenes from imagination professionally. once I am happy in my skill with the pencil (and that wont be until a very longggggg time) I will then concern myself with colour. every now and then I do get the urge to paint though..and get flabbergasted at how much I truly suck in the process!!

I have a lot to learn but will be totally appreciative of any hints I get from here, and hope to inspire with my effort and make new friends along the way

The subjects of immediate study at the moment is trees and forested scenes (or how about just saying nature in general you fool!), armour (modern and recent), human anatomy, animal anatomy, clothing/fashion, urban and city design/architecture, vehicles and weapons(modern and recent)

so here are some crap I have done recently, the digital stuff at the bottom are just speed paints. they weren't intended as finished pieces.
I will try to update every couple of days, time permitted, but please note CA Image attachment is totally not time friendly, time is something i do not have in abundance to waste, so it will probably be in weekly dumps on the weekends where I deliberately slow my self down.

good luck to all who are in the same boat trying to improve don't give up!!

p.s. please forgive my writing in the images and the quality of the drawings itself , it is scribbling that was only intended for my eyes. xP

"draw motherfucker draw" made me smile. I write little notes to myself like that too, nice to know I'm not alone.

Anywayz welcome to the forums hopefully we will see you posting more here. I like your studies of women, you've managed to keep them nice & feminine. My lasses are still at the stage of butch shotputter. Also your wolf is pretty rockin too and I'd suggest you keep up the colour studies along with your pencil. I found it helped more to develop both at a steady rate. You're right in wanting to get good with pencil first as well, as you need solid foundations before you start painting away. But I wouldn't neglect painting totally - I have 1 day a week designagted to painting practice.

Keep it up, you're making good progress.

spacejellyThank you for the comment I will admit, i do feel the urge to paint whenever I do a lot of penciling. Will perhaps follow your example and dig in once a week with nothing but digi paint and watercolours

Hey Luther! Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook!
Great studies so far, your faces all carry good expression which is awesome.
I also agree with SpaceJelly on the painting, leave some time during the week just to
practice with it, you're doing all the right things by mainly using pencil so it won't cause
    any harm.

    Keep it up!

Due great book so far. I really dig the tree studies. Those are things I want to focus on also. Mostly I have been doing studies studies studies. Objects, people mostly. did you do all those from just life or photo ref? And I know what you mean about trying digi painting then becoming discouraged ha ha. Keep up the work!

Hey there Pete, Thanks for the words I'm sure it's needless to say but try a bit of sketching from imagination alongside your studies. Play with what you learn
The studies are a mix of from life, where I troll the city just drawing everything but mainly studying buildings and roofs with pen and watercolour. will post those up sometime soon; and from photo ref where I study clothing , armour, guns.

Stay strong and thanks for checking out my sketchbook

    Some quick value studies.
Havent been able to draw as much with my nephew around.
It's not good practice to copy from other illustrators depending on their level. that being said, there is always something to be learnt from other people.

Matija Vuk Thanks for the kind words

here is some stuff from today! didn't get as much done as I would like and the second study wasnt flowing as I would have liked so ended up spending quite longer than normal on a value study, and even then I didn't finish it... I normally like to just jump straight in with grayscale rather than spent time to line, but when things tend to drag on and I don't feel I am learning: it's time to call it quits.

    EDIT
okay weird! images aren't uploading, let's try this again

Loving what you do here... Studies and balancing it with a good amount of painting. I really love that generalized animal, especially. And that Akuma is awesome! You're on the right track. Are you going to art-school or some sort, btw? just curious. Well, I'll comeback here when you do.

    Keep 'em coming

good start with the many studies
i would try to push them farther though. try to match your study reference perfectly, even if it takes a very long time. that way you will push your capabilities forward.. slow going, but the speed will come over time, important thing for now is to go for quality

    Thanks guys!

Ian, couldn't agree more about trying to render out my scenes perfectly, definitely improves translation and observational skills, however at times I tend to do a study but select a main area to try and understand, sometimes though what happens when doing a study, my brain feels like it stops working and I'm not learning anything more and I'm just there, copying. lol

I take it easier on the weekends, do some reading and practice my japanese.
here's the small stuff from today

if you feel like that, there's nothing wrong with taking a break to draw something imaginative, or even do something like playing video games to refresh

Ian haha I suppose, I'd probably lean towards relaxing with a game than imaginative work, I get too excited to bang something out from imagination only to get annoyed at how badly I still suck I'm playing, I push through that feeling regardless to finish it off as a speed paint

so lately I've been doing a lot of repetition drills for anatomy and figures, anything. anatomy and poses, I do a rep of quick sketches over and over, what happens is that each time I return to the image, I start to know instinctively where muscles or key features are, and then it gets more and more refined as I go along. Now I can draw the muscles of the arm from any position roughly. It's a daily thing I must do.
for portraits, I do a quick gesture of shade and line Before I delve into a traditional graphite study and then once complete I do it digitally. lol REPETITION BABY.

Luthartalyor thanks for stopping by my sb. Good progress here so far. I particularly like the last study. Keep swapping between digi and traditional media. It will be a blessing in the long run. I have a few suggestions for you. First off is to try and keep your line work more fluid. Practice creating forms in one stroke, even if its slightly off. Then try to correct it with another line through the first one. You can also try drawing in pen. It will help to improve your silhouettes as well. Make sure you measure as accurate as you can when studying from photos. A good way to see where your mistakes are is to copy paste the photo your studying over your drawing after you think you are close. Or draw a grid over the photo and your drawing. Make sure your are flipping your canvas regularly too. You start to notice common mistakes among all your measurements, then you can keep that in mind when starting new pieces. For process experiment a lot and write it down. This will open up whole new areas of your imagination. You can also scour the internet/youtube for artist videos and see how pros draw. That can give you tons of tips on how to utilize photoshop to its fullest. Keep on pushing man, looking forward to seeing you progress.

haha thanks spacejelly! I still need to work more in back and white to understand value more especially in scenes rather than just people! but for now until end of september I'm focusing on Humans and anatomy.

Alright figured i will post something here as I haven't been keeping up with it much lately!
scanning all the studies in would just kill me so I think it is a case I shall upload the last page of every drill session I do.
anyway here is some shitty digital stuff I did from my last post til now.

about an hour and a half no reference, except the facepaint. did this one for my sister in law who was holding a facepaint day. I wasn'r pleased with this in the slightest.

still trying to get female anatomy down. Again no reference Sorry for the nudity, we are all artists here anyway
