    COW 267 Belestial

    Artist: MAC

Critiques and advise are always appreciated.

This once proud xenophobic species of the beholder kin hunted its brethren relentlessly. The pursued kin cursed and banished them in retaliation causing this xenophobe to survive in the recesses of space. Undergoing immense evolutionary change from biochemical to bio-energy the species developed technologically as well. They now encase themselves in runed symbolic housing reminiscing of their forming selves. They not only changed physically but culturally as well. The vast and drastic changes have rendered them passionate and empathic to other species and are now known as the Belestials.

lmaooo yes yes, i do love Breath of Fire , FF7. It does totally look like that I think its the stylization of my line work. Now that it is partially painted it should look less stylized and whatnot. I have to stop doing that y'know.. drawing in the same style over and over.. tryin new things and whatnot.

I like your Beholder a lot, nice touch with the armor and chains. It is dynamic, but I'd love to see an updated WIP before I try any crit. I really think it is solid so far.

    Celestial beholder, healer of worlds.

This is what've got so far: a giant floating space-eye, with eyes on it's head and eyes on his tentacles. He uses his magic eyes to restore life on dead planets.

No clue if there is enough angelic or celestial though :/

Thank you so much Oskar! !

I like yours alot so far! it has real potential, the scale could be emphasized more with objects in the back or foreground.
I see what you mean about the angelic celestial thing... maybe try adding like design (beholder tattoos) something angular and euclidean, crosses for biblical ... idk for celestial... some kind of cosmic tribal thing.
    keep at it

    -----------------------------

So developing it further.. taking a break to upload. I think I've emphasized the creature part more... hope I'm not losing the topic anywhere... Made the eye more human like to stick to the old D&D beholder look instead of my style.. Made the wings more like Eagle wings instead of like Card Captor Sakura type xD
Trying to give it the flailing eyes stalks to again, stick to the classic reptilian beholder.

Working on eye beams and anti magic fields will have to wait til the end...
noticed later I gathered inspiration from Safer and Bizarro Sephiroth:

total J-RPG ... xDDD This is awesome too but too big to post.
I looooooovvveee these Sephiroth form concepts To deathh.. love love love.. I remember watching my brother play when I was 5 or 7... FF7 totally shapes my art and style... completely

will definitely have celestial beings flying around and interweaving flight patterns in the wings and eye stalks to show scale and whose side its on.

Concept tid bit: The classic beholder is the bane of D&D players. They're absolutely wretched to fight and impossible to sneak by

C.O.W. #268. D&D Variants: Round 1: Celestial Beholder - WIPs Thread (beholder from Futurama)
Yes beholders are also the most anal of beurocrats!!! what could be more terrifying!!!

So if I'm understanding the topic/brief correctly
"going to turn around that whole “evil” thing; in the world of Dungeons & Dragons, celestial beings functions as purveyors of benevolence and angelic principles."
The anti-beholder would be a TOTAL bane for bad guys e.g. Dark Wizards Dark Elves etc.
There would not be many Celestial beholders floating around, they'd be rare beings and completely solitary, nowhere near the power of a Golden Dragon but 2 tiers lower than the level of the lower Metallic Dragons.

If I had to name it I'd name it ...

    Goy-J'yark-Xekt the Nutrix Stellarum

google translate tells me "Nutrix stellarum" is latin for "Nurse of the stars" haha i always use Google translate for naming...
Even though I took 2 years of honors latin in high school i have no idea if that is correct xD

time to get back to work...
thank you in advance for crit and compliments!! and good luck to all

last thing I did C.O.W. #268. D&D Variants: Round 1: Celestial Beholder - WIPs Thread
more recent than the last image in the attachment's manager below, just didn't wanna make another whole post for another image.... wish I could consolidate everything I've posted here into one.... I may do that for my SB
    any crit appreciated.

Oskar!, i like the idea of an gigantic beholder who heals the tiny planet, but i think he looks like he is about to eat it.
Maybe it´s the expression on his face making me think that? Dont know!

I have put some more hours in my picture. It will probably stay like this, because i will not be able to work on it until the deadline.

The Celestial Beholder is a creature which is rarely found.
Some adventurers tell stories of Celestial Beholders guiding them trough
dark dungeons deep below the surface when they ran out of torches.
They say once a Celestial Beholder touched you with his hand, you can see in the dark.

hmm good idea I was thinking more of a faberge egg style to the beholder concept question can we make eyes not attach to the beholder like floating eyes or not?

I went a tad away from an "eyeball" type eye. This is god's vessel that descend along with angels to purify the world of evil. The center of the creature contains the "eye of god" and the small tentacles above act as the detector of evil energy. The whole vessel radiates with godly aura and protects the rather weak body structure of the vessel. The long tentacles drains the evil energy towards the eye of god for purification. It's like the war tank of the gods that aid the angels in the war between good and evil.

I might work on it a bit more if i have time during the weekdays~

So many pretty eyeballs! I have a thing for eyeballs.

PlasmaErnst: Charming sketches and your final is very lovely! Loving the main eye and your description of it.
Sporus: Wow, you're really putting a lot of work into it. I like that it's become more vivid as you progress.
njoo: Super cool jellyfish! I'd like to see a more obvious eyeball in there.
gavinmacdesign: I like that you're going away from an organic creature to something more mechanic riddled with mysteries!
Emilche: Looking good so far. =)
Oskar!: I really like the story you gave it. It should come to earth and do something about all this pollution.

    C.O.W. #268. D&D Variants: Round 1: Celestial Beholder - WIPs Thread

As you can see I'm struggling with the stones, because of layer mishap I have to do them over again! Currently trying to give them shape and experimenting with the colours to get a more gemstone-look. Haven't decided what the final colours it should be yet.

    C&C very welcome!

    Sporus haha awesome post

Sunparasite i like your design, but it looks more like "winter" or "ice cream" than "celestial" but it is just my opinion.

Oskar! I really like it, cant wait to see it finished.

Edit: i still cant see my attached image hope this wont interfere with the activities.

Oohhhh my goodness. I'm super late to the punchbowl here (I always seem to read these on the day or so before the deadline) but as an avid player of D&D I can't resist giving it the old college try. And hey, it's not like I had other things to do tonight.

    PontusEuxinus: Thank you!

Sporus: You don't need that many flashy filters, but adding some color might be good I usually make a layer on top of the grayscale and set it to color so I don't break the grayscale image.

Here is my second WIP cleaning up a bit more and trying to make it sharper.

really shouldn't have stopped to post this but my hand needed a break too...

Oskar thats perfect!!! the additional diamond type things really change its mood and whether or not it is evil.

gah, i don't expect to win, but man this was fun. I learned it is really not enough or anything to have a decent idea. I need the skills to create what I have in my head. To create exactly what I have imagined takes a lonnng time and in the end it won't ever be exactly that because you change your painting on whims and what looks good there...

6 or so more hours to go.
