Yeah there are many UFO's in painting of this type. It's usually read as artists trying to interpret bible extracts talking about things like 'discs of golden light' and how angels ride about on them. This is before the popular imagery of iridescent wings set in. They just happen to look like modern ideas of UFOs, it doesn't actually mean anything significant or that UFOs have visited Just passages from the bible put into art that happen to look like something else to the 21st century mind.

You sure that's not just a smudge or decay, like the rest of those inexplicable brown parts in the sky?

I've never heard of that before. You sure about that one?

But I must admit, angel imagery would be ten times more interesting if it was the norm for them to surf the skies like in Eureka Seven or something.

    Heeehee!

Yeah I'm pretty sure, or at least it's what we were told during an art history lecture. There's more than a handful of paintings from this time period that feature fiery ufos, it's just what was in vogue at the time I guess since the commissioner stated what was to be in the painting and the artist was just there to visually represent what someone described to them in words and do as told. Everyone alive at that time would recognise what the ufo objects were supposed to represent even if we don't today, so it's pretty certain it's a religious or biblical reference.

That and many times when something of religious significance happens in history from 700AD to the Renaissance historians record sightings of strange lights in the sky, fiery clouds, blah blah, like with the sacking of Lindisfarne Monastery. Just one of those things I guess I hate to use the word propaganda but that's kinda how it works.

If you ask me, the whole business of finding UFOs in medieval art is the same as finding Freudian imagery in everything... If you want to see a penis, you'll see a penis. If you want to see a UFO, you'll see a UFO.

Most of the "UFOs" I've seen in medieval art could just as plausibly be variations of stylized light rays/holy aura emanating from ordinary heavenly bodies or supernatural beings. And some just look like schmutz.

I can imagine it is a bit disappointing if you see a UFO where you expect to see a penis...

All this talk of seeing UFOs and penises and flying unidentified penises reminds
    me of this recent incident:

"A man who is said to have the world’s largest penis was stopped by security at an airport after guards feared he had a suspect package hidden in his pants, a report has said. "

This kind of thing happens to me -all- the time.
