And to think I was thinking of laying out a week, Cant now, sounds great.

    Bam!

This is my first post on the Concept Art forums, so I thought I'd participate in one of the weekly contests to immediately get involved. I'm in the process of trying to improve both my skills and my portfolio (with my 7 year old wacom tablet in hand) in order to eventually become a professional in the field. Maybe, with your help, that will be a bit less daunting!

Anyhow, here is my entry for the contest (that's how it works, right?)

    IOW #31: Spaceship Wreck

    And now the final image...

    IOW #31: Spaceship Wreck

There are quite a few changes I would make to this - right now it looks quite static to me. But, for a first illustration in over 6 months, it's a start.

Latus – Cool illustration. I do think that it resembles Endor a bit though, especially with the natives looking like Ewoks! Also the trees in the mid ground don't look completely natural, they are mirrored copies, but I think you could either change the scale too or introduce some variation. The background is fantastic and I look forward to seeing the colour palette you use. The ships simplistic design and low level technology really complements the native tribal scene and could create a very interesting story.

Cardinal Rose – Glad you decided to post something and join the challenges. Your entry definitely has an epic sci-fi feel to it. I think you could push the composition further and increase the distance between pilot and ship, to add a greater sense of scale? The colour and rendering are great but maybe the cockpit could show some signs of damage too, it looks too new compared with the rest of the ship. Maybe some wind / dust might help with the static feel? I like it as it is though, looks isolated and lonely, like an uninhabited distant world.

    Just my thoughts, great work!

Haven't been around the forums in a long time, but I thought I would join in on the fun even though there are only a few days left. Here are my first steps, Final up before deadline! (Still lots to do )

    Wreck Discovery

So I cocked my head 45 degrees before I took a whack at this one and so far I think it's working out. No one has done an ocean wreck yet. So why not?
I based my ideas off of downed WWII aircraft and the like.
    IOW #31: Spaceship Wreck

That eventually turned into this pencil sketch
    IOW #31: Spaceship Wreck

    Which turned into this WIP

I started sketching #19 from my thumbs but I just struggled tremendously. It wasn't until hours were wasted when I realized that I didn't know what to do with the image because I didn't have a clear vision of what I wanted the ship to look like. So I racked my brain trying to think of a spaceship design. With this imaginary ship's image in my head, I kept sketching until I finally got something I liked.

Today, I spent some time sketching #12 from my thumbs, but I love the way my first sketch turned out so I'll probably continue with that one instead. Of course, time is also running out and the first sketch is closer to finish than the other. Not to mention, I can't stop thinking of a toilet when I look at my second sketch. If I were to do this again, I'd definitely concept out a ship first. Even a silhouette or a rough concept could have potentially saved me hours.
