Been forever since I've participated. I'm gonna jump in on this one for sure!
GREAT TOPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you Eofn!
Here's a quick pose sketch.
Futuristic's far out of my comfort zone, I was even going to wait for another prompt but I promised myself to do as many of these challenges before uni as I can.
And would you believe I got an idea?
For mine; He had survived countless untold horrors, amongst them assassination attempts, and even wars that decimated most of his vast armies.
That he ascended his role and became something of a living legend amongst the universe.
There's a new war starting up with an alien race with hopelessly advanced technology and earth's forces are on the verge of accepting defeat before they'd even started. What didn't help was their commander is rumored to be sick, lying on his deathbed a slim shadow of what he used to be. War moral is at an all time low.
The monarch knew they'd have little chance if their war hero faded at their time of need. So he made arrangements with the most brilliant, if heavily critisised, minds of their generation to come up with a solution to have their hero command upon the battlefields again. He's still technically alive, but through the most painful means imaginable. His flesh decays but little by little, technology replaces what is lost. His current state is kept secret. Nothing matters as long as he is still able to take command.
A hero doesn't deserve this sort of torture. Even though he still commands his troops flawlessly, he yearns for failure so that he may finally die.
I'm going to keep sketching around. But this is going to be more fun than I thought.

Just playing around...
Thinking a sort of play on the whole... "History Repeats Itself" adage...
Perhaps mankind just forgoes guns and goes back to a sort of medieval weaponry (albeit maybe some sort of modification like perhaps laser etched blades or perhaps 'laser'blades instead of gunblades).
Hmmm this will be a fun practice.
Found some suitably vile colours for my vile theme. (Aha, I'm joking. I will fix that all up)
Need to get the lineart done before I get serious in the painting though. So I'll get that done first.

Not really futuristic yet. I'm going to try and sci-fi up his armor and go a bit medieval-punk. We'll seeeee!
Nice stuff guys .. Just tried to position my char. somehow - quite difficult to crack this one.
@victorq - i like 8 and 11, 11th clothing doesn't quite fit the era tho, but looks cool.
Those are soem cool WIPS naidy/wow
Obier; sweeeet energy in those silhouettes!
cool stuff from everyone...
Blarrrp. He looks a lot younger now. Still figuring out the rest of his coat and how to make him more sci-fi. The heart-shaped thingy is supposed to be the royal crest.
Gosh, everyone's looks so cool!
Let me get in on this. Here's some sketches yo.
This is where I left off today, got burned out... these silhouettes method I used is pretty new to me so I ended up not being able to pull off something out of it properly O.o. Guess I went too loose/ and sci fi is waaaaaay out of my comfort zone also so I'll be qqing all along this chow probably XD
@pixeltuner: Really like your direction and I envy your speed. Try to show more his importance, I mean he is the "personal bodyguard of the monarch" and a capt, but he is looking more like a veteran soldier or something now. It's just a suggestion though, I can see it shining the way are going, giving him a feel of a very objective and efficient bodyguard, but that might be harder to fit to the description.
@obier: amazing flow and clarity on your first sketches, go for it and thanks for the feedback ^^
@agent melon: Thanks for the feedback! I like the style you are giving to your concept, but keep in mind he is still supposed to be the royal bodyguard, giving him a walking stick repels the bodyguard aspect and makes him look too much like just a captain. Think of why he needs the walking stick and try solving that problem with a mechanical member just like you did with the arm.
@caffeinetooth: guess it checks with the description, and is looking really good, keep at it! =D
I've been doing a lot of faffing round, painting wise. Still not got much of a handle for digital. Any crits are seriously welcome. I'm feeling like I'm flagging here.
Anyways, some real nice concepts coming out.
Lagarto: I like how your painting's going. He's got a nice face too. Your design's looking a little super-heroish to me though. Perhaps it would be good to do some research of the current armour that armies use. Trends tend to be layering light, but dense materials so men can move fast, but still be protected. I imagine in the future they'll beable to get even thinner, but perhaps not lyrcra thin. ;D Mind you, the lycra look has worked in many sci-fis. Either way, perhaps more research. Same goes with firearms. Find what works nower'days, why it works, and then just build up your designs from that.
Mat: Your guy's looking baddass, and I like the sound of medieval/scifi clash. Lazor swords sounds like a fun concept! It's looking good so far, but the arm on the left strikes me as positioned funny. His upper arm looks like it's raised but the lower looks level and straight, no foreshortening. I'm not too good at verbalising my crits, but it wouldnt hurt to have a mess around with that arm.
Caffiene tooth: I think your's has one of my favourite faces so far. He stands out to me. Good job on painting the scars too, No crits really. Mind you The black armour looks nice and refined, but make sure it doesn't fade to the background. I hope there are a few points of contrast (like the white sword and the white lines you've given on his arm) dotted through his design. Really looking good though so keep it up.
Blacksnowman: Nice sketches so far. Mind you, that one on the right, is he wearing shades? it almost looks comical! If that's not the direction you want to head for, perhaps look at figuring out the balance between comically garish and unique. Good start though!
Victor: Your thumbnails were great. And your design isn't looking so bad either. The lights on the sheild are a nice way of keeping your otherwise very medieval design futuristic. He reminds me of a police man on the left.
I think the right chest plate's got a better feel than the left, if that's anything but crit wise I don't have much to say.

Naidy Really digging how the color-scheme is coming along! I'm getting a pulp fiction feel from it.
Wanted to get a military renaissance theme on this guy. The idea is that his armor makes him resembles a Spartan commander. I guess that I'm kind of influenced by Warhammer on that part
How I pictured the captain of the guard. A leader and a fighter with a really big gun hanging at his side.
@VictorQ - Yeah the cane wasn't working, I kind of forgot that he was a bodyguard as well. Not really fond of giving him more visible mechanical parts though, the arm showing like it is doesn't sit right with me as it is.
Updated, now with more huge rail gun!
Starting to block out the composition now and get a sense of the lighting.
@Naidy: Thanks for the comment. I'm really enjoying the style and the color color choices you have so far. I would bring in the bulge on his left arm tho, because it kinda looks like a misplaced breast. ALso I would try to preposition the arms and legs some to give a little give a more interesting silhouette as well as a little more personality. Nice job so far tho :-)
