    Glad to see Tsutomu Nihei being recommended several times in this thread. I would definitely place him in the "fine arts" camp simply due to his incredible environments. His environments really stand out with their volume and space and he has a great understanding of contrasts. Hiroaki Samura is also another one - very fluid, gestural drawings and beautiful pencil work. I sometimes read his manga "Blade of the Immortal" just to absorb his art.

    I can also recommend Natsuki Sumeragi, Akihiro Yamada (Shinobi, Twelve Kingdoms), and Jun Suemi (who seems to work in oils in a classical manner). It's hard to find those who go against the grain, but I think these artists do. Don't know if your presentation is over, but this is my two cents. =)
