Question Am I talking to the artist? Or scam artist? In regards to Ron Adrian (comic book pro)

Now, this is annoying. So we are starting a comic book company and are having some trouble verifying a couple of the artists.

SCAMMERS are everywhere. I know that three of them have tried to fool us the past week.

Now we are trying to figure out how to verify one particular artist who is known, a top talent, but has never had his own website.

How can we be sure of who he is? What steps can we take? He contacted us after seeing our postings here and elsewhere.

The one artist in question is Ron Adrian, who is a killer talent, but I have no way of knowing if the kind gentleman emailing me is the real deal.

He is asking for half up front, half upon delivery. Normally artists have invoiced me every 4 to 5 pages.

    His work...

Is it possible to meet in person with this guy?
Blog - Check it out. It's fun.

Sketchbook - I should really update more often.

Portfolio - The most fun of them all.

He also goes by Ronaldo Adriano (he's Brazilian). He's represented by Glass House Graphics, his resume page is here and bio/interview are here. You could always ask him for some references, or directly contact some of the people he's worked with in the past and make sure everything checks out. I understand being wary of a Josh Hoopes-type situation, but I doubt this is one.
    EDIT: Here's his DeviantArt page.

Wow, thanks, Elwell. Different email on that page. And why did this Ron Adrian who contacted me not send me to that deviantart page?

I smell a rat. Just emailed the real Ron.

Wow, I didn't know there is a thing like fake artists trying to take your money. That sounds pretty terrifying.

If this does turn out to be a scam, let Rich Johnston at Bleeding Cool know about it and he'll get the word out.

He was a fake. I have traded emails with the real Ron Adrian, who doesn't even speak English well enough to write emails in English. Unreal.

Oog, glad I could help at least, and it's good that Ron knows somebody is using his name/work to scam people. Like I said, let Rich know.

Yes, sir. I did just that. Too bad it's not possible to chop the thumbs off of these creeps.

I heard about this scam before. Real shame that somebody would target the comic industry. Probably the least lucrative industry to leach off of. The scam must be high risk because it's sooo high profile. All to rip off the most overworked and underpaid profession.

He used rocketmail, but a different account. I think this is likely the same guy.
