lionheartGFX Yup, all from head. Mouths are gradually gettings easier. Thanks dude.

16th of 31. All that black crap around me isn't my hair. I was wearing fur cap while painting this SP. The reason: it gets cold here in Finland during the winter. No, just kidding. Need to change things up a bit. I tend focus on details and getting things just right instead of the overall picture.

Forrest_I Dude, your encouragement means a lot to me ! Giving up is not an option. Sucking is only a temporary state.

17th of 31. For today's SP session I decided to do something quick and fun. Rendering and details were a big no no. I also discovered that by using two mirrors I get tons of new angles to do SPs ! No more of boring 3/4 view and looking straight at the viewer. PROFILES ! Looks like this SP rampage might continue for a tad longer.

I started this painting back in November but I'm not feeling it anymore. I've been trying to finish it for so many weeks and I just can't take it anymore. I'm just going call it quits and move on. I also felt that it was taking all my time from my digi studies. Nevertheless, it still pisses me off that I can't seem to finish anything.

the finishes pieces will come in time, dude be patient (i know it sound crappy coming from me) for now MASTER getting those big shapes right, and if you find time get more values to get the transition of one plane to the next, rendering and the tight stuff comes after you cand o a decent underpainting and the structure it requires

if you feel you are not doing enough do more! copy some people with good structure and that know what they are doing it doesnt have to be vilppu or hampton, do a list of what would you want to draw and start doing that, and really push yourself too like, do 5 portraits a day and 2 from imagination, stuff like that hope to see more ozark hang in there!

lionheartGFX Thanks dude for the advice.

19th of 31. Tried doing one in color and… failed. I didn't remember that I sucked this bad. Color still trips me up, especially skin tones. My values are all over the place. Anybody got some good advice ? Well, tomorrow is another day with a new SP. Round two bring it on !

Today at work I had a nice long talk with a girl from Michigan and realized that my English will never be at the same level of a native's. Thought I'd share this even though nobody really cares.

20th of 31. Did better than yesterday but still got a long way to go.

I know I've fallen behind updates but that's just because I've also tried keeping up a social life for obvious reasons.
It's good to get your mind off of art from time to time. So here's what I've been up to.

21st of 31. Let's just say that I was slightly pissed off.

    22nd of 31. COLOR Y SO HARD ?

A sketchbook page. Delving more into facial expressions. I also realized that the less I render out a face the more younger the face will look.

    Crappy studies be craptastic...

keep the studies coming man you ahve to blow through the crap to get to the good stuff, also good call on realizing that a delicate line can suggest youth, i can also point to femmininty or something delicate, try to incorporate lineweight to your drawings to show shadow information, if theres a spot in the study that has a strong light above it you acn use lighter lines or sometimes no lines at all to suggest that light information in the same manner you can show where a place is darker, line weight is also useful to bring out the overlaps in the face or the figure you have to keep on looking and searching for those T interceptions in your study, if you havent read some vilppu he could help you loads in structure

also one thing i have been doing recently i dont know if you would like to try that excercise, but when drawing self portraits or just plain portraits from photos try drawing the features individually in another part of the paper so you can analyze one by one they are and what are they telling us and then draw the portrait normally, and dont worry about not being as good in english as a native its really hard to speak english in a native manner

happy holidays my friend and i hope you can keep this balance with social life and art, good luck!

lionheartGFX I'm suffering from an information overload. It may take a while for me to process all of those suggestions. I've been trying to avoid Vilppu (he's Finnish btw haha) because I suspect I won't gain anything by doing studies of his stuff. The time spent on Vilppu could be better used by doing figures from imagination and making my own solutions. On the other hand I could read what he has to say. Thanks for the support and I hope you enjoyed your holidays.

in that manner i completly agree with you that doing stuff from head and coming up with your own solutions and answers its a great way to learn, but of course when you get stuck you can always go back and see what the great masters did, the figures from your head are coming along, try to imagine someone doing something (sports, eating, running, anything!) and let that help you figure out different poses, dancing is also a very good activity to draw because it exploits the rythim of the body, i like the bold strokes in your portraits but also try to lower the brushsize and dive into certains details that interest you if you get bored move to another place and build little by little the features, those legs look good take a close look to the knees those are real tricky, specially womens knees they can make or break a figure hope you enjoyed your holidays as well i will come back for more Ozarkness, and push through i can see progress but lets give it more time keep going!

lionheartGFX Imma keep going on full throttle and stay motivated. I'm going to make a list of things to study like you suggested and keep updating this thread daily. For the past month I've done these SPs after work which is the routine I'm hoping to keep up. Go to work, sketch at work if possible, go home, study, sleep, go to work... You get the picture. So far it's worked perfectly. Life drawing is also going to start soon. YAY ! I'm hoping to reach at least some milestones during 2013. But more on that later.

Ozarkness. I like the sound of that. Might have to copyright it.

28th 31. The end is near. Why am I orange ?

Today I played some hockey with my friends . Winter's awesome.

29th of 31. Somehow I didn't feel like painting but you gotta practice no matter what.

Should do more of these kind of sketchbook pages. On the downside they're really time-consuming. The face on the right is from ref but everything else is mostly from imagination.

The site wasn't working for me on New Year's Eve so didn't get update this thread before 2013. So anyway here's all the stuff I was suppose to upload on Monday.

31st of 31. I DID IT. This last one was a quickie because I was in a hurry to set off some fireworks with a friend of mine. Hence the protective glasses.
