    PMMurphy Drawings

Hello, i am 21 years old and a young artist. I will simply be sharing my work and various studies / sketches i do. I will try to keep this thread active with updates on a daily basis. If i cannot supply an update or a new drawing i will fetch drawings from my DeviantArt account and start uploading those.

I hope you enjoy my work and if you have opinions and ideas to help me improve as an artist i am open ears.

This current work in progress is mario/toad standing on a cliff witnessing a natural disaster ruin an environment.

I am trying to create a chaotic and dramatic atmosphere.

I hope you enjoy it. I plan to take a long time on this current WIP.

Here is a cover album i did for a friend and a real life drawing of a dock. (i rushed it and cut out alot of the picture because i didn't have the time to go back and draw it all in one sitting basically.)

This is an actual landscape done from memory or imagination. I did this in 2008.

Dumping the rest of my stuff from deviant art here.

Some of these are just doodles or sketches. Some are abstract art and one of them is a study of fire using chalk pastels. None of these are finished works and alot of them have common misstakes and problems i already know about. I have a rather large list of things i want to improve in my art that i will be systematically tackling one at a time.

This is pretty much everything and anything ive drawn. Most of these have some kind of meaning or reason behind them, if your curious about one go ahead and ask.

Also here is a link to my deviant art for better quality pictures and other things.
    http://pmmurphy.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=0

Now i cant freebump with pictures of my stuff since there is nothing else!

So i started drawing this. Finished the composition drawing and wanted to start shading and such. Then i sneezed. Tried putting stuff back together didn't work out. So i decided to do an imagination exercise, i drew the composition using a reference then shaded and added shadows without.

It's nice that you are doing so many still life and life studies! The photography hurts the presentation of the images just a little (making it a little hard to critique your work), but I am not one to talk. I should go get a scanner or learn to take better photographs, too.

I'd suggest just keep doing what you're doing. If you want additional instruction, check out some of the videos over at ctrl+paint, particularly the "unplugged" series:
    http://www.ctrlpaint.com/tag/unplugged/

Of particular interest are the ones at the bottom, but really-- any of them are good and can teach something valuable.

I hope to see you continue your sketchbook!

thanks syrella I find it strange how my images are being presented considering i am using a scanner. Next time i scan i will look carefully at my settings (or maybe i should clean it).

I will definately check out that unplugged series probably tomorrow. For now i go to sleep.

Haha. Yeah, sometimes scanners can go on the fritz too. The images just seem a little blurry and out of focus to me, that's all. Maybe there's something wrong with the way I'm seeing them, too. I'm a little tired as well.

Get some rest! No use burning yourself out.

syrella I have figured out the problem. The sketchbook i am using for these is very old and folded all over the place. SO when it goes on the scanner its not equally level, so the scanner doesn't scan certain locations correctly.

Here is my first attempt at gesture drawing. I plan to do these daily with my life drawing and still lifes. (that is until i get a project to work on). Also the finish to my mario drawing that i stopped halfway through because i recongized so many flaws it made working on it not as fun.

Also i don't have alot of sketchbooks with open pages now, and these gestures take up alot of space fast. So i am going to be doing them on line paper until i can get a new job in order to supply myself with more sketchbooks. I plan to reserve the sketchbook paper for my still lifes and studies.

I tried doing a detailed drawing of a person in mix but it just failed so bad that i stopped working on it. I couldn't even draw the gestural form before the detailed so it was just a failure. Some of the gesture drawings i uploaded are from real life (i asked my brother to do random poses for me) while other are from posemaniacs. The real life ones i just spent as long as it took to quickly draw the pose semi-accurately without really timing it. The pose maniac ones are all 30 seconds long.

    Spoons exercise.

20 gesture drawings of 3 different sized spoons. (not each)

Then a still life of all 3 spoons using gestures as foundation.

(all my still lifes are going to be like this now that i learned a way to better my accuracy and get rid of theses nasty disproportionate drawings thanks syrella for the web series reference!)

Some of these are flipped i am too lazy to go through and edit them with GIMP. I will do that on days i am less lazy.

EDIT: Looks like i have to go to gimp anyway and make these files i am uploading smaller. I'll post eventually.

You are doing good. On your figure studies try to work on your lines, don't scratch that much.

    Keep on drawing!

thanks latus i am not good at drawing people. I learned recently that i should try to get the figure down on these gesture drawings to as few strokes as possible. I am working on it! Also thanks for the encouragement.

Still life of a flashlight. This is my first successful still life. Looks just like it.

So i was out of my house all day from 5 am till 12am. I had driver's ed then went on a trip to the pocanoes to visit my aunt where i spent most of my time in an enviroment not friendly to sketching. Also i was visiting relatives i havn't seen for years and we went to a resturant and such.

All i have are these gestural drawings that are terrible. I did these on the road trip up to the pocanoes i tried to capture moving vehicles and trucks, overpasses, trees, signs, landscape(s) and various objects that i saw during the drive. Some of them you can recognize. Most you cant lol. And i did a semi-fast gestural of a landscape until driver's ed started, i guess you can say it spent about 1 minute on it.

Also i forgot my pencil sharpener, so i couldn't really practice line quality since i was having difficulty getting pencil strokes period

thanks kevin_ I appreciate your comment and i have been working on being more clean. As for the chicken scratch when i get more comfortable with quick gestures i'm sure that will go away.

So i redrew and edited an old drawing of mine i did 3 years ago. Its a surreal conceptual drawing of an old man that is supposed to resemble a sort of monk. Sitting on a bench reflecting on life after he sculpted the world in the sand beneath him.

The first one is the current one the second is the old one.

thanks kevin_. I still want to work on this some. I have it posted on some sites to get some feedback, i feel like its missing alot of greys and forms are shaky in some areas.

I will probably never be finished with this piece. I honestly don't know why i am revamping it in the first place i should redraw the whole thing from scratch. That is actually my plan, but first i have to learn perspective better and lots of other stuff. (sorry about the ramble).

Anyway thanks for popping in! I appreciate it.

Good variety of stuff here, but I'm seeing blending tools being used. Try to get your pencil control down - it won't happen overnight and I used tortillians for years before I decided stop using them and do value solely with the pencil. Or, use tortillians very sparingly.

    Keep practicing.
