    JonHop's Sketchbook

Ok so starting my sketchbook here

The main thing I'm trying to concentrate on at the moment is improving my ability to draw the human anatomy as it's the thing I've drawn the least and I really need and want to improve.

So This book will have lots of anatomy sketches etc a long with other things I do.

First 2 recent studies from photos

    one a landscape

the other butterbean, what I have so far from working on it yesterday, just studying a fuller figure male for the 2D jam on Cghub.

I also created a physical sketchbook which I plan to do 1-2 hour anatomy drawing in each day, I'll upload the past couple of days from that after this post.

I plan to post in this sketchbook the work I do everyday.

cool stuff. I like the gestures. I would recommend (if you haven't heard of it) looking into the book Bridgeman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life. It's an excellent book to help further your studies in the human figure. Keep it up man do you draw from live models at all?

I'll def check out that book, thanks for the advice. I haven't had the opportunity to draw using live models since I was in college (2002 i think) and that was maybe one or two sessions. But it is something I want to do, just need to find a place where they do it nearby.

    Pixelovely sketches

and polished the butterbean study a little more, not gonna take it further as I was just interested in getting the body shape and type down.

    Work from yesterday

    Anatomy sketches using pixelovely site

and a photoshop painting of a still life I set up.

My still life has a time limit of between 2-3 hours so some parts will be less polished than others. I'm not super fast yet.

Busy weekend away from home at my sister in laws and then heading out with my wife her cousin and a couple of friends to the japan expo and comic con on sunday then off to see my family in England on tuesday so I wont be back in france until 18 of this month so that's the reason if I don't update. But I will be doing a lot of physical sketches to keep up practicing and improving while I'm away .

I managed to get in one sketch whilst at comic con and the japan expo in paris and the day before I was at 'la Defense' sketching people in the big mall but I haven't scanned those in yet, I will when I get back from england if there's no scanner there.

Probably my last update until the 18 of July.

I'll be working whilst away though and have plenty to scan in from my trip .

    Comic con sketch of model.

Ok a bit late in posting this update (been dreading using the file uploader for 20+ images as it taks a while and my comp is being quite slow since ive been back) so a rather big post of skecthes, not everything I did but a lot of it.

first 4 are from a drop in figure drawing session I managed to find whilst in England.

The rest are from studying using pixelovely and lovecastle timed images. Not in exact order but the last 2 are from yesterday.

Far to long since I posted in here. Sorry for my inactivity on this forum, I'll try to update this sketchbook more regularly.

Here's some things I've been working on recently ( not in order)

    sea creature design

    process of that

    dragon sketch I'm refining X 2

    rat sketch

    light practice

Also I'm really likeing the new upload feature (the old one was a huge hassle to upload mulitple images) and design of the site .

Interesting design for the sea creature, and those light studies are really well done too. For the dragon, I think there should be more of the background color seeping in on the far side, and I'd also maybe consider adding some subtle complimentary colors (brown orange/red-ish) into the blues for more variation and/or as color in your darkest darks. And some hint of color in the highlights could be good too, actually. Otherwise it feels a little pasty:/ My 2c. But yeah, keep it up! More updates

Thanks Fess, I only just read your comment, but I had done some of the things you mentioned anyway. I appreciate the feedback .

Done with the dragon, decided to turn up the saturation levels on it as well to see the difference.

    Iguana head study also.

Hey man, good job on the elephant and ostrich skeleton studies, really digging those. As for the latest concept, it generally looks better when similar things aren't placed so that they line up on an image, unless it is an illustration and you're leading the eye somewhere (but even then, you d want to spice it up with some variety and opposing shapes). In a concept like that, I'd probably try to have one head higher and more back/towards towards the middle of the composition, and the one could be where it's at. Or vice versa. You'll get a much more interesting silhouette that way too. Also look out for how things connect anatomically (joints, muscle insertions/origins and so on) - not only is it a good way to have naturally spaced zones of higher detail, but it makes the creature more interesting and believable too. But those anatomical studies and all the others you've been doing is definitely the right way to go about it. Need to do more of that meself, actually. >_>

Thanks for the feedback fess, I was thinking about removing one of the heads, but I think what you suggested is a better idea, I'll probably re-work this in the next week or so.

fogot to post this up here. Haven't done anything this week as I hurt my wrist and have had to rest it, but I should probably be able to start getting some work done tomorrow.
