    ChOW#294 :: Spaceship Pinup

    Character of the Week #294
    Spaceship Pinup

Design an Pinup character for the Earth Defence Unit Battleships!!

DEADLINE: SUNDAY 8th July 8PM GMT+1 (9PM British Summer Time)
    Check your timezone!

Like the bombers of world war two, the Earth Defence Unit (EDU) paint pinups on their battleships. We would like you to design a pinup character to help inspire our boys (and girls) in battle!

The pinup can be either male or female but must be human. The style is entirely up to you, but just as the 1940's pinups were from the era, consider what fashion and beauty might be in the future.

If you're stuck for some inspiration, take a look on google at the Star Wars Pinups!

    The Guidelines:
    • Can be male or female
    • Must be human
    • Consider futuristic fashion and styles
    • Think about the presentation of the character - will you show it on part of the ship, as a pinup poster, or possibly a hologram?
    • Can be any style

    THE RULES
In addition to the brief, if you do not follow these rules, you will not be included in the poll.
    • Files must be named: CHoW#294_Username
(Files with any other names such as final.jpg or even chow294final.jpg will not be accepted)
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread BEFORE the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
    • At least 3/4 of the focus character must be visible
    • Final images must be accompanied with a basic character sheet in a separate image
Character sheets should at the very least show a sketch of the front and back of the character and a couple of early thumbnails/silhouettes.
    • Follow the brief!

Art is not about competing against others and being better than everyone else, but it is about competing against yourself and discovering your greatest potential!

    So wait a second.
A pin-up that you put on a battleship.
On warplanes I understand that the pilot could see them, or the ground crew.
Battleships aren't famous for pin-up motifs.
If you don't mean giant, battleship-sized holograms, I don't know what you mean. Because otherwise, I just cannot imagine the paintjob being noticeable.

Why couldn't it be for the smaller fighter ships? I know the battleship is mentioned, but I figured for the smaller space fighters they could still paint pinups on their ships.

I'm just looking for excuses to paint planet-sized "hello sailor" holograms that our boys in the space navy would have used.

Of course we mind! >[ now get off our.. nah it's cool Splinter. Feel free to join the fray

As for my take on this I went through a few sketches, but I had a pretty solid idea of what I wanted to draw. I didn't want to create something that looked fake, or just sexy woman in a shiny robot or something. I wanted to create a character that looks as though she's in a lived in future, is one of the on hand mechanics down at a space dock or something and was caught doing her job. So currently have this sketch of a rather hard working woman wiping sweat off her brow as she gets to work refueling some kind of space vehicle. Something about troop morale is on my mind when I'm thinking about this, everyone pulling their part or something

Here is some progress. A few hours worth. I'm thinking of some sort of logo for the Earth Defense Unit to put in as the background, I may come up with some other stuff. Kinda avoiding the kind of pinup that would have a chick straddling a rocket/big gun. Also to clear up any questions about the thigh, they just aren't separated yet, I just threw in some quick value on the legs. It will be more clear in my next update.

Havok - hey man i think your missing a tick with that logo in the background. circles are pretty interesting things in composition. they draw the eye right too them. i think with your logo if you moved it up abit it will give you more focus on the character. at the moment the edge of the top of her head is hitting the edge which feels abit weird. i think it goes to the rule about edges shouldn't really meet like that but yeh, think you could do some more interesting with your logo as a background man. im crap at explaining things so i hope that helps.

Tchuk - interested to see how yours develops man. really liked your last few chow and cow ideas!

did some sketching. not sure on it so far might try a different thumb.

    Spaceship Pinup

I thought I'd go outside my comfort zone and do a male figure this time ...

@Tchuk- I'm liking your rough concept so far

@no87- I really like your pose for "D" but I also really like the way the circle frames the pose in "A"
    ----------
I've got the basic pose down I think, still trying to figure out stuff like props, and what type of vehicle I want to plaster this on the side of

critiques welcome, the legs are giving me a bit of trouble.

@no87: Thanks for the suggestion. I will have to play with it a bit. It's more of a place holder than anything right now, but I will definitely try different compositions with it for sure.

No87 - I really like the composition you have on all of the choices. I think my favorite is "D."

bopx - I really like the base sketch that you have. I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Just finished spending some time on poses that I might like. Let me know what you think.

Pixeltuner: Nice, though perhaps if she were pulling up some stockings or something a bit more pinuppy?

I got way too into this today. I think this may be the time I actually finish a CHoW!

    ChOW#294 :: Spaceship Pinup

Yeah she's riding a penishoverbike. I figure in the future everyone will wear foil.

Bopx, I'm loving yours so far! In fact, everyone seems to be pulling out some great stuff this time.

Thanks bopx and no87 It's cool you liked my last ideas no87, I've like to think even without the rendering skills of someone like PixelTuner I might make up for it a bit with my concepts

Incidentally, nice pic Pixel definitely needs to have some sultry themes added to the mix though

Yours is really nice too FoxinShocks, I think a better pose might have helped her out though. Something more exaggerated that accentuated her curves.

Here's a blog that seems very useful for this topic anyway.

Babe Lab - One of my favourites

Anyway sketch update, I've always liked girl who have a bit of attitude about them and are about to kick all sorts of arse So here's my pin up girl blatantly disregarding fire and safety protocol I've also added some robotic power-walkers, I figure traveling around an entire space dock might require some better legs and it helps with the sci-fi element Might need to redraw the face though, the angle seems off.
