Illustration of the Week #29: Saturday evening Post Cover
This is a two week topic.
This weeks topic is Saturday Evening Post Cover. For decades the Saturday Evening Post had an array of some of the best illustrators of all time doing their covers. Many of the images are famous today, and made the careers of giants such as Norman Rockwell and JC Leyendecker.
Your job now is to create your own version of a Saturday Evening Post cover in a style reminiscent of the original cover artists. Just as in the time of the real covers, the topic of the cover is up to the artist. Take a look at some of the covers of the past to see what sorts of things were typically painted. Remember that oftentimes the cover was somewhat relevant to current world events. The text on the cover is optional--include it if you want, but don't feel obliged to.
The deadline is Sunday 8th of July, 23:59 GMT
"Complacency is the womb of mediocrity. " -- Jason Manley
"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." -- Bruce Lee
Very interesting topic! I've never tried the style before, should be a very good exercise in understanding of basics.

I'm from the Philippines and this is the first time I'm hearing about The Saturday Evening Post magazine. Would really love to do this IOW but have to do research first. hehe Really glad Sean and Arhan are here to point us in the right direction(",) thanks guys for the images and links!
interesting topic indeed )))
Got an idea for this... I'm going to have to get out the old camera and cajole someone into posing for study though. The internet failed on my search for drawing reference.

need to fix the eye on the face
Here's my WIP. Going for old school colors, going to try and match the old cover text and paint it in later. Chose student loans as a topic for the cover to keep it--topical and a bit more current.
Update. Decided to make this a bit more colorful. Got the face sorted...now I just have to get the rest of it knocked out. Not sure where I'm going with that other hand, other than my urge to find some way of not painting it. Yeah, lazy.
