Trying to find a reference camera..

So I've decided to invest into getting a new camera to take reference pictures with. But I'm not really a camera person so I don't know what is out there that I could get by with using. I've been looking at the Nikon D3200, it has 24.2 mp, and the photos it takes are gorgeous. But I'm wondering if there is anything cheaper out there that still takes quality shots.
For the most part I want a camera that takes vivid, steady pictures and captures color well.
Any help and suggestions would be great.

I suggest two photography forums to research. go to the Canon Digital Photography Forum

With Canon or Nikon you really can't go wrong, they are the top tier manufacturers of DSLRs.
