I'm taking my first ever design class and we had to do some sketches of what our designs would look like. I'm having a really hard time in this class. I don't know what it is, but my designs seem really weak and boring compared to everyone else's.

Sketches for my second design project... we had to have a design in which the positive space and the negative space were reversible.

This is a still life made with ink, only using hatching and cross-hatching to shade the objects.

Here is an assignment I had for my Drawing I class. We had an egg, lit it up with lights, and we were to draw it in a low key value range. We were focusing on composition and value, so I offset the egg, and I used two lights to create shadows that filled the rest of the page.

    18" x 24" Charcoal

Here are two drawings of a sheet. One is on the wall, and I have the lighting so it created a really big shadow. The other one is draped over a cart.

    Hello CA!

It's been a long time since I updated my Sketchbook thread. I was very busy with school and making a lot of artwork in the meantime, so I've documented all of it and I'm ready to upload all of it.

Here's everything else I worked on in my art classes last semester...

Okay! Now that the art dump is over... time to get back to the current stuff...

Here's some studies of the Sheriff from Disney's Robin Hood (I love his character):

I was working on creating something from Robin Hood from my imagination, but it turned out like garbage... thinking about completely starting over again.

Also, I've never used a tablet for art before, this is my first attempt.

I've been working on this every night for like the past two weeks, over 30 hours have gone into this and it's going nowhere. It looks like crap. I just can't draw from my imagination. I've redone this drawing several times, erasing and redrawing again and again and again and again. Proportions are off. Again. Again. Again. I've got such a long way to go with this and I hate it. I want to chuck my tablet into the wall.

I actually feel that in working on this for so long that I'm actually getting LESS practice and just wasting time.

A self portrait I've been working on since I woke up this morning. I always have trouble with the facial proportions, and it doesn't help that my face is crooked. I was getting bored rendering this, so I just stopped here.

With everything you draw or paint comes a bit of learning, and mostly seeing things and remembering them in your mind,
Never let doubt or failure get to you, because failure doesnt really exist in drawing or painting its all practice,
so keep your hope up, do them quick studies and profit from them in the long run!

    Cheers!

Thanks for the motivation! I don't know, sometimes it gets really boring doing studies all the time and I never get to draw anything I want.

hey man nice sketchbook uou have here, alot of expression wich is awesome! but i think you are rushing a little bit, take the time to tackle 2d geo-forms, learn what are your basic shapes and start constructing your drawings! drawing fun stuff its all fine but you must have a method of doing so, i recommend you make your initial sketches more structured, this initial sketch isnt supposed to look pretty, its supposed to help you get rid of all the doubtns about posing, layout, composition and perspective so you can focus in the next stages of bringin the finish to a level you are comfortable with, if you overlook this by simply calling it boring you are not doing yourself a favor, i understand that drawing fun stuff its what makes ourselves fall in love even more with this line of work, but if you want to actually make it in the industry you have to start getting solid practice when you dont just copy what you see but UNDERSTAND it.

if you havent read loomis i recommend you to do so, also i always give beginners michael hamptons site wich is helpful for the figure www.figuredrawing.info

also look up michael d mattesi he made a book called force, aaaand if you ever want to do landscape look no further than jack hamm books called landscapes and seascapes.

if you like glen kean i would encourage you to look at some of his film and production animation work and try to mimic his lines with a focus on form and motion, he is a master at using lineweight to play an emotional role even in the most basic of his drawings pick up on this things and think about them, in the beggining its all about making this drawing stuff less of a mystery so you can a bit LATER start creating stuff (or referencing from the world first so you can later take that study and turn it into something creative)

anyway keep it up man i hope to see alot more and more thoughts on this, i reallyliked the desing thumbs i thought originally they were compositions but still they work very well ah i saw you ask about your linework, dont worry about it for now that comes with pure mileage and trying to make less scratchy lines and doing a conscious effort to be more loose.

Dude those lines aren't even parallel. The thing that bothers me most is laziness.

This comment is not helpful to me and it came off as rude. According to rule number 3 of the Rules for Sketchbooks [http://conceptart.org/forums/showthr...or-Sketchbooks] you should be aiming to help people, not insult them.

Anyway, I worked on a self portrait...
