ChoW#290 :: Guardian of the Flame

    Character of the Week #290
    Guardian of the Flame

Design the Guardian of the Flame!

DEADLINE: SUNDAY 3rd June 8PM GMT+1 (9PM British Summer Time)
    Check your timezone!

Every four years, during the olympics, a flame is carried and lights a beacon at the opening ceremony. However what most people don't know is that for the rest of the time during the four years, this sacred flame is protected by an ancient guardian, tasked by the gods of Olympus.

This week's task is to create this ancient being, who protects the flame from those that might steal it.

    The Guidelines:
    • Can be any gender
    • Consider HOW they might protect the flame
    • Must be flame related
    • Does not have to be humanoid - but please no gelatinous blobs.

    THE RULES
In addition to the brief, if you do not follow these rules, you will not be included in the poll.
    • Files must be named: CHoW#290_Username
(Files with any other names such as final.jpg or even chow290final.jpg will not be accepted)
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread BEFORE the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
    • At least 3/4 of the focus character must be visible
    • Final images must be accompanied with a basic character sheet in a separate image
Character sheets should at the very least show a sketch of the front and back of the character and a couple of early thumbnails/silhouettes.
    • Follow the brief!

Initial idea. Basically going to be a phoenix guardian. Seems fitting to have a bird of fire be the guardian of the Olympic flame.

Wanted to have something that was the embodiment of the flame. Found out that the peacock was Hera's bird, and a symbol of eternal life. Each "eye" on the feathers is an all seeing eye of the gods, which protect it from being stolen. My thought is that a feather is clipped once every 4 years by one who is worthy and becomes the flame which is carried.

    Initial sketch thoughts:

    Abrazuno looks cool, and huge!
    Havok Reed yep, good idea!
    MasterTroglodyte...farting digitally, hm...nice!

These guyz have been forced to use magic, to protect the flame. Might sketch a female too!...and then decide which one!
Anatomy issues, yep! Early days yet!

@ Abrazuno: That's titanic! and if that's the volcano god's offspring..I'd hate to see his mistress looks great..he looks like he/it could protect the crap out of that flame!

@ Havok Reed: Crapples! thats a great idea! but it sucks cuz I didnt think of it...so there! j/k I really like the composition so far that's gonna look bad-ass!..watch the perspective on that little dude tho...probably just a placeholder..anyhow...

@ MasterTroglodyte: ?!?!? when I fart...digitally or analog-ly..it never looks that great! (let's not even talk about the smell) anyhow, the columns are a great touch..and a ghost no less..love what you've done with the face...no mouth..creeepy!

@ carakhan: wow. gorgeous...very delicate..and yet it must hide some incredible power...love the colors..wish I could do stuff like that..

@ jsn: I llike 1's necklace idea...2's toga placement..3's pose and 4's power...now mix them up and get mega-power-wizard-protector-of-the-lame-necklace-with-a-cool-toga-guy! one thing...make sure you light your figures based on the "fire" element if you wanna make it bright looking..or dont maybe it's not bright while the guardian holds it..hmmmm >_>

ok so I havent done a chow in forever...and you guys dont even remember me at all...no sweat... the first thing that came to mind...I know..GENERO-MAN! but oh well...just trying to warm back into it just trying to work on the values as I suck w color.like the pose...but he's a bit too lame I think...we'll see. I also have to put something to show scale..he's a giant...a colossus..of rhodes. the idea is that in modern times he's hiddedn somewhere in greece, but he still holds the original flame from back-when

The banner became difficult to keep updated between two people in the format it was in. However, we will be starting the countdown for a new king/queen very shortly and a new version of the banner will be implemented.

Thinking love child of Hephaestus's when he had a tryst with a mountain nymph or something rock elemental. He swallows the fire and contains the sacred flame in his belly where it can safely rest until summoned for the next olympics. What i got after this morning, Memorial day going to take up the rest of my free time.

I don't think a creature would be necessary a bad thing, as long as it possessed qualities that conveyed not a species identity but an individual identity, unique to that specific beast alone. The God's made a lot of things besides just humanoids

I understand that this is character of the week, but the brief says it doesn't have to be a humanoid. Maybe an official clarification should be made for this one?

A character is an individual, a being of at least moderate intelligence, with features and characteristics that are unique to itself - whereas a creature is for all intense and purpose just an animal. Just because a character isn't humanoid, it doesn't mean it's not a character. For example think of the characters in Beauty and the Beast - a clock, a teapot, a cup, a candlestick etc.

(For extra clarification humanoid is two legs, two arms, and face with similar human features)

    EXAMPLE OF NON-HUMANOID CHARACTER

This character is the one that Prometheus outsmarted, right?
This guardian, who didn't do his job well, so Prometheus stole the flame and took it to the humans.

This ancient can be a bit grouchy sometimes; flame retriever, beware.

Infused with the energy of the eternal flame, this guardian has her powers revived. Once the fire is removed, a great tiredness falls into her and she can do little more than rest her weary frame.

However, she does not enjoy sleeping, so she can be a bit reluctant to hand it over.

Just a doodle, I probably won't finish or anything.

    Great job Pixel, and everyone.

My idea is of a guardian that protects the olimpic flame not from people or creatures but from loneliness and despair. This ancient and elemental guardian is the only one in the entire universe that can speak the languaje of fire, thus being the only one who can make company to the flame. He isn't there all day with the flame, but he can´t let the flame alone more than two or three days. He also is the one in charge to find the kind of branches and wood that this special flames likes. Human eye can't detect the guardian, but some people and most creatures can feel his presence. Some people talks about him as the god of fire, but he can't stand that...he is just the guardian of the flame...nothing more, nothing less......ok he exists before the universe, but he is not a god ok?

Another nice topic. Tons of cool ideas that could come from this one.

Clash of the Titans ( the real one, not the recent mess) was such an inspiration for me when I was a kid. Medusa, the three headed dog thing (whatever it's called), and all the other goodness was too much to handle.

It may have been the Greek god/myth in general that I fell in love with. Those peeps were nuts about their gods.

Ironbyte, Maybe let the flame sip trough at other parts of his body ( neck or torso), because as of now he looks a bit plain from the head down. Otherwise, solid base concept. Edit: just saw your variations, yea that's a lot better, I vote for #1 with head of #2.

Claudio Grassi Genero-man looks pretty good, I like the hidden colossus idea form your short description, that could be really interesting.

Abrazuno Interestign mythological foundation, I like the linework as well.

Pixeltuner Love the mechanical look on #1 and #3. Could be one of Daedalus' creations.

Elephant's stroke Very original concept and back story, I like how you clearly defined the relationship between the guardian and the flame. About the WIP tough, right now it looks as if he was made of wood, is that intended?

Bnoch Stunning work as usual, may I ask how much time it took you to make your concept? Lookign forward to see more.

Everybody else looking forward to see more wips.

Alright so here is mine. (1-2)

One of the spirits that worked in conjunction with Prometeus to deliver the flame to the humans became so attached to the element of fire that when Zeus discovered his existence, he decided to bind him with that element, thus transforming him into a guardian of fire.

Carefully chosen among the best and the bravest, each olympic torch bearer must convince this spirit of granting him a parcel of the sacred flame.

3...is because I need some sleep.

Here is an update on mine. Not really sure where to go with it, except make the guardian big.

The guardian waits for four long years. On top of the world; out of reach for ordinary mortals. Never taking his eyes off the fire.
