I can't really give you any crits since you're more advanced than I am. Just going to say good work, prob do more blending like I need to do... I was going to ask, how do you decide where to start your color/tone scale? Sometimes I start on a painting and then its way too light/dark and I have to adjust it mid way...

greymatter thx gray, hmm.. just guessing? if wrong, pick another tone, wrong then pick again, but adjust it in mid way is not a problem, as long as you get it right, use the advantage of photoshop

study the head planes again, still not getting it right
critiques and advise will be appreciated

Your'e using hard brush - which is good, and it works pretty well on that first portrait.

Two things that are most visible and consistent with you work though, are:

    A) proportions are wayyy off, try doing a more precise point to point study on the overall proportions before you start painting.

    B) The values (how bright or dark) you lay down are mostly correct on the brighter side, but the shadows aren't dark enough.

Squint your eyes when you look at your references and make sure that the contrast between your values is correct. Compare everything.
I still think you should put more emphasis into the point to point though, as proportions are off.
Don't be discouraged though, its a good start and I like your inherent brush stroke style

    Read the Sargent notes: http://www.goodbrush.com/misc/painti...gent_notes.pdf

then reread them again and again

then paint until you're going blind

    then reread the sargent notes

Think in 3D always, try to do some life painting to greatly help with this, buy a plaster head. When you're painting feel the form of what it is you're trying to convey.

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

    reread the Sargent notes again.
