jsn unusual is good in my book
still don't like his head, maybe I'll go for an uncovered monster face rather than the whole faceless thing.

So many awesome entries!! I would sell my soul to some of them, like Pixeltuner's or Geb's or jon n's.

    Wippy wippy got 2 kings!

But I got a question for some of y'all. I'm not much of a character designer (let a lone a "designer" in general) and I've always had a problem with characters for some reason. And this problem deals with style. On this forum, there's always a plethora of a type of character design (it's very "Western" if I may say), but not always cartoon or anime/animoo/ or that distinct Chinese or Japanese style (artists like Heise or styles like in Magna Carta (game)). My inclination is more Eastern (ie, one of my options below), but it's kind of intimidating/terrifying drawing like that on this forum. Everyone else is a kind of realism, and it's not like I can't paint like that, I'm just not inclined to for character design.

So is, like, a specific/extreme stylization a "good" thing? Especially for an amateur I guess. It's a problem I've always avoided because I don't know how to solve it. Everyone else is painting differently, so it feels like I'm doing something wrong... (Also after seeing jon n's recent entries, I feel a little reassured(?) to be more cartoony. You're an awesome bro!)

Not sure if okay to ask here, but I feel like there may be other peeps who could be wondering the same thing... Thanks.

I have the same problem. Obviously, im not that great at realism either, I still got 3 years of intese schooling ahead of me...but even then, I fear I'm not very good at stylizing, and sometime when I have ideas I think of being original, they end up looking somewhat plain once they are done...but I dont think you should worry about that dude, those designs have a lot of dynamic forms going on in them o__o

    Well, here's my progress.

Don`t fret about it, guys. Yea, people usually vote for entries that are beautifully rendered, or amazing illustrations (god knows we had this discussion over and over again here), but you are doing this so that YOU can get better. Just keep at it. Eventually, something "weird" will happen and you just might win. It happened to me twice, so yea...miracles do exist!

Yesterday I spent some time refining the sketch, figuring out the body under the cloak, how it all attaches etc, and today I`m working on materials and colors. Got 5 days left, am not going to rush it. *slurps a colorful drink with that tiny weird umbrella toothpick in it*

@Barefoot You can keep the head in my opinion, but maybe give him some eyes? I would suggest doing something about his pose too. He seems a little indifferent to me now.

@hekatoncheir I think all styles are welcome here. I see your point about anime, but I guess anime has so much exposure on other sites so if you want to compete against others working in that style you can. From what I've seen on conceptart however, it seems to me that if your execution is excelent eastern style won't stop you from competing. Your sketches look really good by the way.

    @Kerah Haha I love it!

@MightCrawler The helmet looks interesting. The king of hell would certainly have giant headgear

@SandyMan Your ideas will come out better with presentation. I find that making some sort of background always makes the character stand out better. The trick is not to get carried away doing an enviroment like I end up doing

Anyways. Updatey time for me. I've had a fun time painting this guy even if he's wierd. I see him as a trickster/fertility type devil. An impish little usurper who delights in the suffering of others.

He might not be super demonic, but I feel he fits the brief. Still lots I could do with him though.

Varmint Where did that come from! Wow, love the focus and lighting, one seriously scary beast!

PxelSlayer man you make me laugh, glad you're back!

hekatoncheir Good question but as others have said, don't worry too much, it's about self improvement not trying to bend to someone elses techniques. Just have a browse of some sketchbooks and you'll see in no time the variety and quality of different styles here.

I had fun tonight, reworked my sketch, if I didn't have to go to work would keep going but, priorities.

what i did today...just a quick aproximation. Having a hard time with this kind of environment/lighting. Also i´m working with the top black layer in saturation mode, and even if is great to check values, is a pain because you can´t sample colors from the image. Kind of sucks, or i´m missing something here.

Added some props. The king now has three magic orbs to aid him in ruling the kingdom of hell. He also has no pants.

Spent some time on the crown as well. Better be careful or he's gonna wrap your soul up in there

And in case you where wondering: Yes, he is making rude noises with his hands.

@Hoa-Nam I think you could use some reference photos to improve his anatomy. His feet seem very bulbous and at an odd angle to each other. It's also quite hard to make out what his front arm is doing with the big brace or elbow guard he has. You could fix that by moving it more out to the side so the elbow shows better in the silhouette.

@jsn Thanks! smart to cut back on color in yours. I would suggest you use some soft edges in the lava to make it seem more liquid. You have hard edges on everything now, which makes the image a bit noisy.

Not sure what universe you guys are from, but there's only one king of hell I know of, well, at least since the Winchester boys sent Lucifer back to the pit anyway...

discarded the first idea because it was a little on the cliche side.
For this one i started doodling with artrage until i saw something with potential. No values yet, just line work. C&C more than appreciated.

    Cheers.

Your awesome Pix, I'm just jelly! Actually more of inspired, I love trying to reverse engineer peoples stuff, and i really like all the strictly digital techniques people use, awesome all around, but i can see where your working on a level that's quick and masterful at the same time, its cool to see!
