Talking Joanna Tsui illustration grad going for concept art

    Hi,

I'm a recent grad out of an illustration program at Sheridan College. I need some direction in term of what I should put or focus on in my portfolio, if I want to apply for full-time concept artist positions at studios like Bethesda, ArenaNet, Bioware and etc. Do you think I should put up a life drawing section? I feel like my portfolio is really lacking something? I'm looking for some portfolio critique.

    Thank you very much,
    Joanna Tsui

I think you're really good and i think you lack just a little perspective works and light knowledge and composition. Maybe doesn't sound like a big problem but it's the most freaking long thing to learn.

No, I understand I still have lots to learn and know how important and hard those are to learn

Aside from that, what do you think of portfolio pieces wise? What can't I get away without, say, character ortho views, life drawing and/or vehicles?

    What do you think?

Thanks for the critique, I appreciate it

I will take off the second one (the guy in linedrawing) cause you've used another style and this can confuse, you have to show a solid style not something that maybe can change, people need to know what to expect from you. If you want to add some linedrawing on your portfolio be sure they are some professional linedrawings, like super detailed and ready for 3d modeling. I will remove the green bag and the potions cause they are too simple and not a big deal in design. The battery is kinda simple but it shows that you're able to do that kind of work if neede so it's not so bad to have one of those kind (the best one obviously).

    That's it

Along with what Hitsu said, I also think you have inconsistent quality, particularly in your illustration section.

    Get rid of this piece.

It's completely lacking in quality when compared to this piece.

I saw the squiggles on the arm and the hair before I saw the rest of the piece. Shoot for the quality of the second piece (because the second piece is gorgeous). If you can, try and touch up the rest of the examples because although they aren't bad, there's still a noticeable quality difference.

I am in love with this piece, as well as the following one with the same character. Really beautifully made & great character.

Dreamy surrealism from outer space ♥
