Just finished this commission a little while ago. I wasn't too familiar with the Warhammer 40k universe, so I had my dude walk me through it a bit. Anyways, I'm pleased with the results and would like to do more illustrations of this caliber. I gotta a couple (non-WH)characters lined up, so it's very likely. Otherwise, I'm always looking for commissions. Thanks for looking!

Unfortunately, yes, that is typical. If you want good feedback there are some other forums that tend to be more active like CGTalk and (to a lessor degree) CGHub. Polycount.com also has a 2D section that's pretty vibrant.
My thoughts on your piece:
As a fan of the W40K universe, I'd like to see your next (if there is another) trip into that world, a bit more gritty. Somewhat related, the looser style you used on the background would be cool to see incorporated more into the rendering of the character to make a more cohesive overall piece. I'd also keep pushing your light sources to better turn your forms on your character to keep things from flattening out too much. Great colors and I love the attention to detail!

Cool pic. I messed with 40k for a few years and my only comment will be to look what other artists have done. I could tell right away you're new with this game and it looks a little... strange? 40k is very dark and gritty.

M'kay. Just to touch on a few things: the perspective on the shoulder pads is off; the head and jaw are perched rather awkwardly over the 'collar'; the perspective on the hand weapon is a bit off (particularly looking at the skull and the shaft); the perspective, articulation, shape and sheer size of the legs is off. I have no idea what's going on with the background or where all the orange rim-light is coming from, and the stark, transparent, 'computer-graphicy' style doesn't mesh with the opaque, low-contrast character.663 views (at the time of this writing) and not a single reply. I can't offer too many pointers with general art techniques and methods, but I've got to wonder exactly what source material the 'dude' was walking you through. I don't know if you plan on many more Space Marines, but I'd suggest a look through Games Workshop's models and official art next time. (army books, RPG books, fiction covers, etc.) Start with Hardy Fowler's work on CA.
