    Teen Challenge 163: Kappa

    Teen Challenge 163: Kappa

    Teen Challenge 163: Kappa

    Topic
This week's topic is Kappa. This is a mythical creature from Japan with a fondness for politeness, rape, cucumbers and peeking up kimonos. It also has an indentation in its head filled with water that gives it power (if spilled it can't move).

    Focus
This weeks focus is Design. Read about and research the kappa, and make sure that its characteristics are reflected in the design. Try to get the personality and the habits of the creature to show visually.

    Deadline
The deadline is Sunday 20th of May, 23:59 GMT

Well, I can't say that I will get an entry in but the idea of the Kappa kind of lured me in until I doodled this guy.

As you can see, i put a lot of effort into the legs (:

Yeah... in hindsight that was a REALLY bad idea! I should have also gone into this with everything laid out, now I have to do everything around my creature.
    Gonna have to fix that.

I'm sure this looks horrendous, but it's a step somewhere.

Aquascale: nice design so far, the texture on the head is looking good try to use more colors than just the ones on the side there though.

HarbingerofIllrepute: haha looking good. textures and lighting are working really well. and i think what kamiru meant was to break up the large areas of dark, not just adjust the levels/curves. i think the pure black worked better, just either crop it or add other things to break up the space. take a look at some of max verehin's "dark" works for example: Lord of the Flies

Kamiru: nice start, it has a lot of mood so far. you might wanna play with the composition a bit though. lots of "empty" space right now.

heres what I've got so far. used the extra time this week to do some studies first:

    and the lines:

was just gonna have the kappas at first but then added the girl. hope it still reads as humorous and not (god forbid) dark, edgy turtleman-rape D:

@lancer_idenoure Tsssssssst, you're gonna make this really difficult aren't you? Those are some badass sketches! Haha! And yeah, I figured that... I wanted to go for a swampy water-ish gradient before I went into filling out the background. Still working a few things out before I block in the background so it isn't so... spacious. lol I saw your livestream, pretty awesome stuff! I can tell that this is going to be an epic competition between the four of us.

    Way better, HarbingerofIllrepute!
Very cool, lancer_idenoure, I like the studies. I should do more :p.
The sketch looks so cool, jenny7332.

Anyways, here is my thing, I'm gonna use Tropical trees like the one on the left. I'm still not sure about the color, composition, the kappa, and everything else :p.

Sweet Jesus! Things are coming along well, good work everybody! One thing though, I am seeing lots of turtle reference in these designs. Now correct me if I am wrong, but Kappa are also based on the Japanese Giant Salamander. It would be interesting to see a bit of that make it in
    Here's a quick reference-

Nice concepts, everyone. Especially lancer, wow!
I wanted to attend this week as well, but I started to late and have no time. So here's a quick idea I had, maybe I'll finish it later. The kappa should have flowers in the one hand, and a baseball bat (or rope or sth) in the other hidden behind his shell.
Have fun finishing your entries, and good luck!

thought I might as well put up the sketches I made before I started painting.
I think lancer and I used some of the same references
