When you do your value studies I would recommend that you squint your eyes first at the image of what you are looking at. This way it breaks everything down into a blurry mess haha. But actually it helps to weed out all that bullshit detail which you can get into later and instead focus on the true values of the piece. You are hitting up the detail parts too early before you have established the overall feel of the piece structure wise. Think of it like this when you are doing your drawings/paintings 1)big shapes to build structure 2) add value to these shapes (even if they are just hard shapes with no true shading thats fine) 3)shrink your brush slightly and look at how each form differs from each other value wise (this is the start of your light journey) put in slightly smaller shapes to give hints of this 4) start to tighten up things a bit, and i mean a bit...do not go overboard. 5) flip it/reverse the image and then look at what you are referencing (does it look the same or feel just as good the other way around?) Good then start to develop the light transitions from one area to the other (this part can be a bitch, but if your first step is sound then the rest is wayyy easier), 6) dont be afraid to paint over the parts you think need work with BIG brushes again...its all about learning so you will not lose either way. 7) add detail...the last step.

Hope this sleepy run on sentence helped somewhat....if not refer to this for your inspiration:

^ a nice little study that exemplifies what I am talking about.
