Character of the Week #287
The Thing Under The Bed
Design the being that lives in the world under the bed
DEADLINE: SUNDAY 13th MAY 8PM GMT+1 (9PM British Summer Time)
Check your timezone!
As we all know, there are hundreds of different worlds out there; some accessible and other not. Some are even hidden within out own world, and can be reached through special portals, places in specific locations. One of the more common portal locations is underneath beds - children's beds to be more specific. The creatures in this other world creep through the portals at night - some are good, some are mischievous but other are nasty and want to cause harm.
This week, we would like you to design a being that lives under your bed. Bare in mind, this is an individual character, completely unique to you and the contents found in the world under your bed.
- Can be any gender
- Can be any time/setting
- Can be any genre
- CANNOT BE HUMAN! - It can be humanoid... but not human!
- Consider what is under your bed... what kind of world might that create?
- Can be either good or evil, but make sure it's clear. What is it your being wants in our world?
In addition to the brief, if you do not follow these rules, you will not be included in the poll.
- Files must be named: CHoW#287_Username (Files with any other names such as final.jpg or even chow287final.jpg will not be accepted)
- Finals must be posted in the finals thread BEFORE the deadline
- Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
- At least 3/4 of the focus character must be visible
- Final images must be accompanied with a basic character sheet in a separate image Character sheets should at the very least show a sketch of the front and back of the character and a couple of early thumbnails/silhouettes.
- Follow the brief!
Can it be an Incubus?
The most beautiful thing we can experience is the
mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all
science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who
can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe,
is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.
Braazaaaa - master of dustbunnies from hell! And a hoarder. Also, a bit of a douche.
OT, I really should go and have a look at whatever is under there.
Bit scared now.
I've always been too afraid to look beneath my bed even in the daytime, but I can imagine it's horrible under there by now
PxelSlayer: I like the worn out traveling salesman monster Have you been watching any Jim Henson movies lately perhaps? Reminds med of one of the puppet designs from the Labyrinth:
I am planning to give it that vibe, make him all raggedy, worn out and tough. That`s what you get when you go adventuring under my bed.
Really...it`s super creepy down there.
And an update. Still have to figure out the design, fix the arm, mess with his face, figure out what to put on his back etc...the works.

Rist - Nice idea with the socks! I think it needs to be more humanoid though, like with arms and legs (maybe a bunch of socks?), this looks more like a creature than character.
For some reason when I read the topic I immediately thought of an episode of Buffy, where sick kids are being taken at night in a hospital by a demon called the Kindestod.
Great freaking scary episode and I think with some adjustments I can do something similar. Tim Burton / Fready Kruegerish.
Nice topic, always fun designing monsters from under thr bed. Monsters, Inc would be a good place to look for inspiration.
I actually think underneath my bed is a very nice place :>
Cute cuddly candy creature should be there.
So yeah, that is the theme of mine.
Here is some sketching.
I have a lot of stuffed animals, I bet it is friends with it and plays with them when I am away :>
Pixeltuner: Nasty niceness. She might have trouble fitting under there though
I want to design a monster adapted to live under beds. It needs to lie down a lot or be flat. Here are some ideas for such a boogeyman. Rugtooth is my favorite so far.
Nice entries so far.
PxelSlayer - you sure "Under The Bed" isn't the name of a night club and this the bouncer? hahaha, awesome stuff
Pixeltuner - why are you doing CHOW? If thats what you have lurking under your bed you have bigger problems than deadlines
So, I did this as a quick warm up for work, might get it done if i continue to use it as part of my warm up throughout the week. This is the prick that is OBVIOUSLY unplugging my alarm clock next to my bed. I'm feeling head #6 personally
According to the brief, the thing under my bed back when I was a teenager would have to have been some sort of depraved creature interested in Playboys and risque videotapes, because that was the environment under my bed back in those simple days before computers. These days it would have to be something that likes to wear winter clothes in the summer, and summer clothes in the winter.
haven't looked under the bed in years. whatever's under there would have gotten big.
Jon n: That's pretty big, you must have a high ceiling in your house
He sort of reminds me of the grinch, only more fat.
Rist: That sock monster should get it's own B-horror movie! I like the face and how close togheter the eyes are. I think you could add a little more of a fabric-like texture to it. It would be more humorous if it looked a bit more like a sock basically.
Hi guys, I think its time for me to try this for the first time... my idea is about King of lost things which has his treasure room under bed (safest place where i never look ). I want to create his costume with all the things you lost somewhere and never found. Here are some first sketches, and I will dive into it more tomorrow
My sketchbook - Please, help me grow Critique very appreciated
Pixeltuner: Allready looking like a winner. I love the tiny monster twist.
Rubajz: I like the concept, Especially the sock banners.
Here is my monster. He has a medical condition with his teeth, hence the drooling. So if you hear disturbing slurping sounds from under the bed: Don't put your feet out
Some interesting interpretations of the theme. I like how different everyones monsters are.
Tamarin: Spiderpets are the best. The character looks deceptively friendly except for the teeth. What about posing him a little more dramatically? Hunched over or talking to his spider?
mythril_golem: You got some nice texture work going there. I like it.
Small update from me. Just some front and side-view sketches. The feet are turned at that odd angle because the character uses his feet on the bottom of the bed instead of the floor to move around.
