I posted this on Yahoo Answers then I remembered I have an account at a site filled with hundreds of artists. What was I thinking?
Anyway, I've pretty much accepted that if I want a job in the creative industry, at some point I'll have to move from out of Kansas City. When I browse through job boards, forums, and company sites, it looks like a lot of creative jobs I'm interested in are located in either NYC or LA. It would be more convenient for me to move to NYC since I have family up there, but if most companies are in Cali, it won't be that convenient in the end.
I have a background in illustration, sequential art (comics, storyboarding), game design, and I'll be transferring to another college in about a year where I'll major in illustration/animation. I'm kind of at a crossroads, in that I'm not sure which industry I want to break into (all I know for sure is that I want to make art for a living), but I know I'm most interested in illustration, gaming, sequential art, and animation.
So, I guess my question would be where are these industries "bustling" most? I know it'll be competitive no matter where I go, but where are most of the these companies located?
And sorry if this question is all over the place; I know what I'm trying to ask, just having trouble putting it into words.
God made us brothers, Prozac made us friends.
There's not just one "industry" or one "commercial art scene." In general, publishing and advertising are centered in NY, film and TV are centered in LA, but that's a gross oversimplification, and those certainly aren't the only two places it's possible to work.
