    Pastels need a lot of buildup to work (and you have to watch for humidity) and it has to grow on the entire support. Besides maybe chalk pastels, I wouldn't recommend them for short studies.

    @Wakakin: yeah I kind of figured it out later but I got something from it by staying with one composition that worked for me. I'll post up the pastel drawing that I did to show what I mean in a bit.
