    Matija Vuk

I come from Croatia and besides labelling myself as a student of life, most of all I enjoy observing and making visual art

for now let me start my sketchbook with this tribute to Andrew Loomis.
it's almost a copy of a cover to his book "Fun with a pencil" from 1939
Done in Photoshop CS6 beta trial

    Matija Vuk

Female figure study from reference also played with some brushes just to see how they look studying mainly form and values here
    Done in PS CS6

    Matija Vuk

Loomis done traditionally with pencils then retouched in photoshop

    Matija Vuk
    Matija Vuk
    Matija Vuk

This one is whole done in ps

    Matija Vuk

And some stuff from my imagination
    pencils, retouched in ps

    Matija Vuk

    Photoshop doodle of a whale

thank you for your respond ma friend, thou you exaggerate my positive sides a bit ^^

"Long time no see" so, I'll upload everything I had been doing since my last post here. I'll try to keep doing art even thou I'm really busy with job, learning web design to get a better job and so..

Ok, I missed this one and shoulda posted it in the with other previous Loomis studies, but here it is now:

    Matija Vuk

I've spent some time on this one, it is made purely from imagination hope you like it

    Matija Vuk

This one was so fun to do - Serge Birault ( you might know him I'm sure , also nicknamed Papaninja ) made an art of female Thor then many artists joined (10-15) and added their versions to his , here's my contribution:

    Matija Vuk

    Matija Vuk

And just to update my old project to new sketchbook, I'm really close to being satisfied with it

Lineart difference, OLD version (from previous sb) and NEW revamped version which I have changed only slightly for the final image

    Matija VukMatija Vuk

All I need to do now is render it well, add good simple background and then I'll spent some more time designing and implementing wings for her - yes, she is angel of the war

    Thank you very much

I have just 1 small update :/ no time, lack of energy .. but hope you like it so in my book it would be much better to do 1 nice study where I learn something than 10 scrappy sketches

Olla again , spam post since no one replied.. kinda deserve it since I don't have much time to browse other people's SB's XD

So, some sea creature / monster right from my imagination, no references used. It could be polished alot more but I'm satisfied with what I tried to achieve.

I can see some real anger in the eyes of this last fish,
you portrayed his feeling really efficiently. Working real
hard and fast is what you are my friend, you make us all
to work more and to feel motivated. I will punish my self
with a fist cause of not coming here more earlier and more often.

Really nice studies and a big passion to develop a skill you have! It resonates strongly with me!
I would probably spend some time doing life drawing, if you haven't a class in your area, online life drawing is good also, better than nothing. you can see here http://www.pixelovely.com/gesture/figuredrawing.php

it's especially important to do it after you hav studied anatomy to where all that knowledge you learned of bone and muscle appears on the surface.
    keep it up

If I happen to comment on your sketchbook, please don't feel obliged to comment on mine. use that time instead to get back to work.

nice sketchbook so far. i used to paint pretty similar when i started digitally. i like ur use of color and that u are thinking about form, light / shadow. ur anatomy studies also look very promising.

only advice i can give is that u should just try to loosen up when working digitally. have fun, dont worry about mistakes and get comfortable and confident with the software and tools u use.

    keep it up

    Hi Matija,

Been checking you sb, I see you have been working a lot, I woul say keep up the anatomy studies and try to push some of your pieces further to a more finished state, I think you could learn a lot working in the final stages of an illustration.

Thanks for commenting in my sb also!

    Keep working!

Hey Matija! It's great to see you starting a sb here. Good progress from what I remember seeing on the Kitchen forums. I really like the energy and looseness when you bring a piece closer to final like the "booty" study from photo ref. My only suggestion would be to slow down a bit and really study the figure when you doing these figure studies like the last two. Instead of quickly working, feeling like you just need to post something. You have proven you can be quite accurate when you really focus, the challenge will be to keep that intention for every study you do. It will pay off in the long run. Keep pushing man!

    - replying to all of you guys tomorrow, I'm so sleepy atm
Not yet done, but I feel like posting updated version of my study and reposting the older version so it's easier to compare them.

    Matija VukMatija Vuk

    EDIT:

@luthertaylor - Yep, some life studies coming up soon , thank you man
@Eric-Anthony - Thank you for visiting and giving me advice. I try to loosen up as much as possible, when I'm not its harder and more boring to do art.
@voraz - Yeah, never enough of anatomy studies its really essential. Btw I do strongly agree with you, the more you go into the final stages of the image the harder it gets, more frustrated I become with results but also what is very POSITIVE about it is - YOU LEARN A LOT MORE - sometimes I just want to do some basic form studies without goin deep into finishing
@Ninjac - thank you for visiting yeah, same discussion as with voraz, the more you go into the polishing, more you learn. Seems like I listened your advice, this last girl figure I'm studying is taking me some time now and each time I update her I'm more satisfied

Thanks for the warm welcome. Browsing through your sketchbook really motivates me. I love your line-work, it's great. I need to learn how to refine my digital work like you. How do you go from a rough W.I.P. like the above and get that finished look?

update, hope you guys like the way I'm going with this piece

@ Zidartha - Thank you man will do
@ Jonathan L. - I'm glad if I help you stay motivated. Refining is the hardest part imo, you can do it for ages and go totally wrong way not even noticing it its something you really develop with time and as you do more and more finished products. Just doing simple basic images will not teach you that.
For WIP piece : I start mainly with round basic brushes, then as I go more into details, soft round brushes with low opacity, some extra texture brushes + range from normal, multiply, overlay, soft light layers do the trick tools are not important they are just there to help you get the image you want.
Important trick is to have the vision, the goal in your head how the image should look alike

    Matija Vuk

Im doing so small updates (ESPECIALLY ON THE FACE) but I'm satisfied with changes, hope you guys can see them and you agree they are goin better and not for worse

This last pinup is so gorgeous, everyone would like to pin her down.
I am still wondering as I look at the painting and deep within her eyes,
is she still a virgin? Or did she already met the large Mexican small town
band? So many questions in such short amount of time. Her legs, her
backside and her tattoos makes her so unbelievably adorable, I just
cannot withheld my true feelings. And I like how her head and mules
shine, creating a divine high feeling within and outside the painting.
Should be restricted in any gerontologycal center to emit this kind
of pictures. Your improvement is visible, even from the bathroom
window, something unbelievable. Every time when fate lacks a bit,
you say to yourself and to the audience; “Here we go again!”.
A true example you are, I am happy about this progress
and beautiful change in your personal and art career.
Do more updates when you can, cause you know
    we all expect that.
