ROUND#255 - Legend of Zelda Monster Redesign
This week's awesome topic is brought to you by Clark, who didn't have the time to post it this week. So instead you get the lame ol' me.
This week we're going to be redesigning a creature from the original N.E.S. game "the legend of Zelda". The game has a good amount of baddies in it as most people know, but I'm going to limit the choices down to 5.
They are the following:

River Zora: http://zelda.wikia.com/wiki/River_Zora
try to maintain the concept of the creature while updating its look. these are pretty old designs that are deserving of an update. so go nuts and give these designs a new twist.
- choose only the listed monsters to redesign.
- you only need to redesign 1, but you may choose to do more if you like. just keep them in the same image.
- your design should be recognizable as to which monster you are redesigning.

It's very tempting, big fan of the zelda games, and I remember encounter these buggers quite often. Dunno if I'll have time but we'll see.
I do have to point out that three of these creature seems to break some rules for cow, peahat is more of a plant-like creature, river zora is a humanoid(ish) and Pols voice doesn't really seem like a complete creature if you think about it. I assume that we can re-design these critters so they are more cow-friendly so to speak.

Man, and I thought the last topic was tough. I decided to muck around with what in my opinion is the lamest of the options, and in the end the most difficult to pull off because of its simplicity. (No offense Si ) Not sure if I'll have time for another one, but this was a good test none the less.
Whiskey Sour: You should just title yours "Badass". Very nice.

Whiskey Sour: Dude your stuff lately is looking fantastic, great improvements lately, man! This image is just classic zelda, although I do have to mention a couple things about Link, one is um....where is his sword? he's holding a boomerang and his sword sheath is empty, and second thing is that it a freaking big ass sheild! Although either one could be explained by the plot of this particular adventure, his sword was taken by moblins or bakoblins or something and he got a larger sheild because he got smaller due to a curse by a wizzrobe, or something like that lol. I'll be waiting for the final, should be epic!
aburnier: nice initial silhos, although when I see these I don't think tektites. They are usually almost always portrayed with a single eye and fours limbs, so try to work with a bit into your silhos, and of course make sure those limbs look like it can lauch the tektites upward a fair distance.
diheb1: those heads are huge, try to see if you can push those designs a little further as well as they are a bit too close to the original designs, this is a re-design challenge afterall.
scorge: I think you can manage to make it even meaner, wondering how you'll tackle the others as well.
Here's some sketches for the River Zora, not sure if I should make it more bony like some amphibians or very scaley and fishy. I may also play with some sketches for the other critters as well before settling on this one.

Tried to keep it looking like an octorok, and keep it Nintendo-ish, but don't think I got the 'updated' thing down...
Whiskey Sour- that thing is terrifying! I like it. My only comment is that it looks more like a boss monster now than an easy-to-kill octorok, but I suppose that's fine... So nevermind.
aburnier- I like the top left one best- looks the most like a tektite and like it can jump. I would beef it up a bit though, all of them look pretty delicate.
diheb1- The new design is better. You might want to experiment with the body shape a little bit, see if you can spice it up a bit
scorge- kudos for trying out the plainest creature! I like the tongue, but I can't help but think those rows and rows of teeth would irritate the tongue when it closed its mouth. But that might just be me. Nice work. I always like your stuff.
Rob Powell- lookin good, no crits. Looking forward to the finish.
A-May- Good start. The peahat looks like he's floating above the trees, but that might just be because this is a rough sketch.
tobba-a- Nice and simple. Curious to see what you come up with for the tektite
Nihilo- I really like the colors and nice rendering. I would like to have some sense of scale as to how big these things are, maybe add in a tree or something. Also, this is nitpicky but it would be very difficult to launch a rock from a beak- air can escape from the corners so it would be tough to build sufficient pressure.

It's been well over a year since I last participated in one of these ad I felt this topic was the perfect time to return. Decided to go with the tektite and rather than have the big cycloptic eye, I'd make it more a natural pattern on the shell to confuse enemies.

The Voice of Pol
long time lurker. still not very good at digital painting, but i wanted to try this out, it might help to finally make me paint more often.
i've written a back story changing 'Pols Voice' to 'Pol's Voice' to bring these guys back to their ghost origins and to explain their name. i'll get to the story later, but for now, my work in progress...
as you can see i've made them use their bell shape to disguise themselves in rooms filled with bells that look similar to them. their tongues mimic the ceiling bells cords you use to ring them, running into either the bell cords or the pol's voice tongues will set off the pol's voices. and of course for imaginary gameplay purposes you can violently ring real bells to stun/damage/destroy pol's voices.

started fleshing out the basic values underneath the sketch, added some peahats in there as well...probably gonna have try to rotate their heads a bit towards the viewer a bit more so the focus doesn't shift so much to the one corner...
wanted to give it that look as if your exploring one of the many temples, in the games, cept with more of a swampy/watery feel, may add some other stuff to help give it that zelda feel, such as vine covered walls and switches and whatnot...maybe even a chest or something...hope the designs show through well enough...although I may have to rethink the design for the peahats since they look way to much like the shredders from Metroid Prime 2 (which are actually quite similar to the peahats I always though)

Here's an update.
Dahlia-- thanks for the critique. I added in a sort of sphincter muscle within the beak to help with the seal, and I made the hook on the beak a little less aggressive. I don't want to lose the beak completely because I kinda like the character it gives to the creature.
