Heya there! This is the first time I ever participate here. I've decided to start working on a portfolio for character design, so I'm sure these challenges will help me improve. I'm sure I won't be able to do them each week, but every now and then I'd really like to. ^^
I hope I can finish the illustration in time because I reeeeally started late, as you might notice. XD
Nice feeling in the picture.
Great style outfit and character
a bit early to crit. Gives me a celtic feel. Keep on render it out.
Beautiful lines. Very promising.
Trying to make him a little more "weathered." Face was the victim of Wolverbear attack and exposure. Wears the skull of the beast with leather insole to protect the flesh which never healed correctly. Gonna have some shaman imbue the skull with some spirit sensor.
@JanJanger - love the pelts and that turban is very original.
@Einen - great developed style and expression of the face.
@JaninaG - Good line work, can't wait to see it colored
@NDread Reaper - The addition of the extra ravens works for me, and the details are coming along good, must have been a massive raven to leave behind a skull that big
@trolljack- Bark armor, never would've thought of that. Seems like an awful lot of meat to be turning their back.
comment more later but a general note: lot of these outfits seem "ceremonial" in essence more than functional for mobility and survivability. I enjoy the fantastic ideas as the next guy though : D
Thanks for the feedback guys, I'll update further tomorrow!
krAtul: Looks good! #2 is definitely my favorite here. bangalore_monkey: I like your style. Hope you'll make a more finished one! JaninaG: Nice lines! Looking forward to seeing more. loengrin: While the rendering looks nice, I think I would have guessed this was more of a death knight or assassin if I didn't know the topic. Perhaps you could make it more hunter-like? The weapon in particular feels inappropriate.
@Jackdaw that's awesome man! @Trolljack I really like the right one better, i feel like it frames better @Einen classic! love it @PhilipScherer I really really like the intricate design, it has a lot of potential, cant wait to see it done!
well, here's my update. i really have practically no experience coloring whatsoever so any advice would be really cool
Trolljack, that design is AMAZING.
Jackdaw, amazing too, great atmosphere, love it.
I went with one of the first ideas, though i did more sketches later....
and some images of the process....at some point i liked the idea of a wolf (as in the scan), but then i saw a similar idea posted so i just went with the eagle face.
I used as a reference a photo from a book with fantasy poses, i´ll scan it later to show it. I´ll do the data sheets later, and i´ll try to refine this drawing a little too, though not too much.
So many cool character designs were posted since my first post on page 2!
I especially loved Trolljack's bark covered hunter, Einen's original design and warm colors and JaninaG's fierce looking hunter. Enough brown-nosing for now!
An update after tweaking some stuff - Hopefully will run with this design to the end and actually present a finished work. Not really expecting to be noticed, but nevertheless, this specific ChoW is just tons of fun
@Gadbury: the overall feeling is great, however he shoots an arrow-like projectile against a strong wind, which does not seem to be a good idea. Though the wind direction is a bit confusing, his hair floats in one way (same as the snowflakes), yet his coat floats in the opposite direction. Very dramatic I admit but slightly confusing.
i guess the overall feeling is great because he sacrifices realism for more impact on the viewer
+shooting against the wind is a logical and good decision, otherwise the prey will get a wind of you
I really, really enjoy all the variety we get here and how everyone has a different approach. I think my favorites for now are Einen's and Trolljack's designs, and Kerah's is also looking awesome for now!
@Kerah: I like your character's face and pose a lot as well as the overall design! But I wanted to point out that his head seems a little big to me... Maybe that's on purpose, but I thought I might as well say it just in case.
So, some progess...
Some basic color tests. The hunter's and rhino's colors in the illustration are not "blended in" with the environment yet, but since I'll be painting with watercolors, it gives me a reference point of where to start anyway.
And the traced pencils ready to be painted. I'm trying out a looser style here as opposed to my usual, very clean stuff. I have no idea how that will turn out. XD
I just finished watching ep8 of Game Of Thrones and now I see this excellent topic. Really nice entries so far. I can't help but feel inspired. I really wish I'd seen this earlier but I'm gonna start off with something anyway. I doub't I'll finish in time but if I don't I'll just post whatever I manage to produce in my SB.
well i dont know if i gonna finish it, but heres my take on this! critics, even this late would be welcomed...i have real difficulty rendering form, if anyone can help me by pointing what i am doing wrong i would apreciatte a lot... Thanks in advance
I guess I'm also pretty late, but I already started to color my northern hunter. You can see he's a badass because he's wearing no sleeves in winter. But he likes to have his feet all warm and cozy.
I realize my design makes no sense, but it's all for fun, eh?
It's my first time to enter Chow, really great (and a bit intimidating) entries so far! Hope I can finish until tomorrow.
