Hi all, Im nearly finished with this.
Was wondering if there is anyone who might have thoughts on how i can finish it off and present it well.
I just I'd ask you guys first to see what you think.
Considering that the tentacles are flailing around lively, I think it's absurdly unlikely that the spikes(?) would line up that neatly and parallel to each other. It kills the sense of movement I believe.
Interesting monster by the way. Like a hybrid of Venom, Dr Octopus and The Fly.
It looks to me like he stepped into that area just to pose for the camera. If it's supposed to look like he's exploding out of a tank of some sort, you can definitely add much more to the picture to suggest that. Glass flying around, water splashing, chords springing free from him, head thrown back, arms flexing and stretching powerfully for the first time, all that jazz. The gesture could definitely be improved, right now he looks rather stiff, almost lazy.
Design wise he's interesting, the head could be a little bit bigger. Watch the structure though; right now his wrists seem to be made of rubber, for example. Try to make him look a little more solid.
Theres something really ehm, curious about the way you colour. Its grungey and dirty in a bad kind of sense. Like you're hiding your mistakes with lines or something.
I agree with Lhune, it does look like hes posing and not all dramating and rawr I broke this tank now I kill you! kinda thing, perhaps you want glass shattered around those tentacle things.
I'm not sure why, but you chosen to ignore your light source and it's making your image look very muddy and flat. You need to get rid of all of that black. I did a paint-over to show how you can use the light to add depth to the image and make it a bit easier to read.
That makes it look MUCH better I agree! Also you pinpointed what I couldn't figure out, its all the black in the painting!
-- The head looks REALLY derivative of the 'Spiderman' villain Venom.
-- The direction that the right foot is pointed does not agree with the angle of the right leg.
-- That is one floppy, broken-looking left thumb.
-- Much of the anatomy seems a bit arbitrary or ill-defined, like the musculature of the chest and neck, and the bones of the wrists. Also, the stretched-flesh texture doesn't follow the curves of the forms in the chest.
-- You have some nice texture and lighting effects, like the "spray" coming off the ends of the tentacles. This ends up looking jarring when compared to the sketchy rendering style of the character.
-- The broken edges of glass should have some highlighting. Right now they are rendered in a sort've 'beveled' style.

get rid of the head, I thought this was venom fan art at first. change that and it could be anything.
