    As it said we were allowed to be liberal with our interpretation of "The Old Man and the Sea," my illustration has nothing to do with Hemingway's novel. Instead, this old man's relationship with the sea is one of loss and longing, as every time he looks into the sea, he is reminded of a drowned woman he loved long ago. He is obsessed with the sea because he believes his lost lover has become one with it, and desperately seeks her ghost within its depths.

    For me an illustration should be more than just a piece of art, it should tell a story.
    Kwshutt had me understanding the story without needing to read his blurb, the image said it all.
