Hi, I just joined up to this forum and after seeing the amazing work wanted to try and make a sketchbook to improve to get up to that level!
So any help would be greatly appreciated
ok so a little about myself, im 26 currently aiming to build a portfolio to become an architecture student and have always loved concept art. its the ideas that really stun me. The thing is that they dont ask for anything specific in the portfolio so im going tobuild it from a wide variety of things. Thank you for taking the time to have a look at this sketchbook.
Here I will be putting daily sketches, most of them will be design based and visual problem solving.
When you do a study about lighting on a ball, than skip the black outlines, since there are no outlines in nature. If you want to do something in comic way (with outlines) than you wont need realistic studies, in my opinion.
You have a good grasp of perspective and a "espacial awareness" (if that word even exists)
In my humble opinion, you should do more of what you did in #4, and combine that with life studies, like the classical apple (it might sound boring but its definitely a helpful exercise)
if you include studies from photos/nature and keep on working perspective and anathomy like you are doing already you will do great things
Also for hands and feets, which are some of the most dificult parts of the human body (along with faces) I recommend Bridgman's book of 100 hands or the human machine, Hogarth's Dynamic anathomy, and of course... studies from photos
Hey man! The architecture stuff looks pretty interesting, but I don't think it really reads that well. When looking at it, I wouldn't think it was necessarily an architectural construction if someone hadn't mentioned it! Try to keep function in mind and be aware of what goes where and why, or it can easily turn out to look a bit crazy with no real sense of what's going on.
That's a fun way to make something as boring as drawing cubes less mundane! Be careful not to do this every time, it might be easier to tell what's going wrong when you can easily tell where each individual cube goes. It looks cooler, but might not be as easy to improve off it! Are you doing them freehand?
thanks yochan, the truth is, they are mainly exercises in form, rather than completed pieces of architecture but yea i will definetly keep that in mind, i think it has been mentioned before also!
With the abstracts, again, i started out freehanding cubes and all kinds of shapes in 1pt perspective, and then at the end this idea came together about the sky etc and it all just kinda clicked. mainly through experimenting.
It does get boring to post just freehanded cuboids and cubes so i wanted to go a diff direction. anyway thank you for the feedback and check the new ID thread for the new project!
