    looking at what you have right now just reminds me more on street fighter characters like e. honda :

    Don't stop looking for more references ... Observe them and try to study them if you have a mannequin pose your figure in such a way it respect the gravity the perspective and the use of foreshortening ... again try to have lots of references even it's not near your character pose ...can't wait to see improvements ... you can however focus on the form instead of rendering colors ... colors are easy to be added since I don't think you have problem with that, anyways cheers!

    and yes, you might be right on the way of painting:
    I should start more roughly and only finish the details when I'm sure it's all fine. On the other hand, if you're not good with gravity and stuff there will automatically be mistakes and that's what this forum is here for; to point them out, so one can learn from them.

    Using references, if you can find what you need, is good to make a good picture, but chances are that you might not pay attention to some things when you dont do them wrong at least once.
    For now, I think I'm gonna let the ogre be since I'm starting to get annoyed by working on the same pic all the time.
    Maybe I'll check it again later, or if someone has a really good crit.

    I love his skin! The yellow/orange colors with diffrent shades of red really catch the viewers eye:o nice job!
