Amazing work everyone! Lots of inspiration in this thread.
This is also my first chow, I'm normally too intimidated to participate, but the topic was too good to pass up! It's two things I am very unfamiliar with drawing - dragons and armor. Thought it'd be a fun challenge to attempt and learn (hope the results aren't too horrible).
Some sketches of the rider and dragon, and a colored wip that I don't know if I'll use since there's the problem of not seeing the shoulder/arm/wing structure from this angle (I just had an idea, maybe it can be fixed ... let's see). I might use the other sketch with it flying overhead and use this one as part of the character sheet. Need to fix all the things that are off though.
The rider's design is worked out a little more than what's shown here (mostly with the helmet/head) but I'll post it later when it's more developed.

I love your designs so far! Especially for the dragon, it gives off a 'wise dragon' feeling of immortality. For the rider, how the breastplate and pelvic armor resemble a backbone and pelvic bone, and the bone-shaped shoulder armor, make me think of a dragon slayer. But seeing your dragon's design makes sense with the design of the armor.
The only thing that stands out to me has to do with the pose of the rider and not the design - the arm holding the sword looks a little awkward to me. It feels like it would be uncomfortable to hold the pose. I think the arm needs to be angled a little more toward the viewer. The shoulder may also be too low, it looks lower than the shoulder not holding the sword if you go by the shoulder armors.
So many awesome ways to go with this topic. Nice stuff from everyone far. I like the choices people are making on their dragons. I have a buddy who does some amazing dragons that are based on a variety of animals like eels, vultures, and angler fish. I'm more drawn toward the less traditional dragon (meaning less scales, horns, etc.).
Maybe it was the IMAX speaking, but I really enjoyed the The Dragon from the Deathly hallows part 1.
...he draws aliens and doesn't afraid of anything...

a few small changes to the design of the character, and a quick comp sketch of the illustration, wanted to demonstrate the bond the rider and the dragon share in this image, the dragon's full design will be included with the orthos, sort of wishing this was a two week topic, since there's a lot that needs to be done, my time this week is fairly limited due to work, but I have a day off tomorrow so we'll see how much I can get done, then. Art is not about competing against others and being better than everyone else, but it is about competing against yourself and discovering your greatest potential!
@landylachs - ya your totally right about that, hopefully this is not total poop like that last post.
Its way to late to do more work on this tonight, but just had to fix some really bad things. Man there are just not enough hours in a day. Hopefully a progress update sometime tomorrow after I get some sleep.
@BNoch, that TOTALLY BLEW MY MIND. HOLY FUCK THAT'S A DELICIOUS DRAGON!!!
Would really appreciate it if you say talk a bit about how you did the flames. Effects have always been my weak point. Looks like you did the white core part and then added the fringes with some sorta brush or phototexture?
