Hey folks, some seriously juicy inspiration in this thread at the moment!

Only had a look at the theme today mind so I'm trying to nail a scene before sunday, so please browse over the un-decided attire

Other than that, was wondering what you guys thought of the composition, how much of the Dragon I should show etc, feels a little cramped at the moment.
Though I like feeling as though the picture is pretty intimate, tried to show their bond as opposed to a glory shot... not sure if that's coming across.

One Human eye, One Dragon eye
.... an eye for an eye.

one more wip, now with the rider, the reason why he uses a mask is because at high speed and with high altitudes it would be difficult to see with the wind on the eyess, so the mask gives him protection, the light armour is for him to be able to move, manipulate, and ride atop the dragon with ease, ill try to make his clothes made with the dragon skin, to be tough but light, his spear is made with the canine of the dragon, imbured with venom, and the large reference to hair his because the dragon has some too, critics more than welcomed and aprecciated..thanks

Some really great pieces, look forward to seeing what everyone ends up with. Especially the Dragons.

Here is a start from me (I just tried to post twice, hope nothing duplicates). Trying to get the scale and composition, see what I can do over the weekend.

I'm calling the dragon done for now. Maybe a final polish pass later on but first I need to finish the character turnaround.

Almost done with the rider, some steampunk/cowboy crept in.

    Back to the dragon.

I've been poking at this for a few days, but never got around to actually posting in here. So here's all the junk I've been through so far, early scribbling for the rider and the dragon, and the final-ish character sheet. (The colours might change a little? I'm not sold on them yet.)

I was originally aiming for somebody fairly modern, then it took a wrong turn through steampunk and ploughed out the other end as some sort of... pirate... cowboy... rogue? I don't even know. Hopefully he has enough dragon bits on him.

And here's a very early compositional idea. Did we ever get an answer on whether we need 3/4 of the dragon? (I scanned the thread and found plenty of people asking, but never saw an answer...)

Here's the piece I've been working on this week.

    "First Flight"

As the young girl and her dragon reach maturity the pairs' first flight is a moment of great rejoicing among the tribes. Before they learn to fight, they learn to fly.

Comments and crits are as welcome as ever.

I'm not happy with the feathers on the dragon's head, or if the girl's dragon skin outifit reads clearly.

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the
mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all
science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who
can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe,
is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.

Pixeltuner - I'd say beef up the wings a whole lot. They look flimsy and vestigial at the moment. I also might connect the membrane to the torso. Other than that it's quite nice.

Here's a quick WIP on the piece I'm doin' right now. Still a lot of the basic rendering to go before I start tackling secondary light etc.

zy. - Stjepan Sejic is awesome i love his work, have you seen his work for The Darkness at all? That's how I came to know of him myself.

Ironbyte - Thanks for your feedback!

Continue - Thanks for your feedback!

Sean McClain - Looking really nice so far!

ashess - I'd say B or C, A doesn't make sense to me. Although if you went with B you may want to consider flipping the tail up, like they are coming out of a dive and leveling off. Just a thought.

OK, so here's my WIP for the scene. Everything is still very mid-tones as I tend to start in the middle and push outwards towards the darks and the lights. Looking for some feedback before I dive into it again.

GEB looks amazing, however the tongue ending right at the rivers edge is causing a tangent that distracts from the over all piece. I would elongate the tongue to break up the river background.

awesome work guys! will try to post some crits sometime tomorrow after work

here's some progress, slowly chipping away at this, changed the dragon's head a bit and added some detailing to the background, probably gonna have to change the girls face, doesn't quite look right to me, still gotta do lots to the dragon's body....hopefully I won't run out of time...

    2 cents

Pixeltuner - Good work as usual, liking your exploration into armor. Think her upper arms are too short. Bandaid... Tehe

Rob Powell - like the flow of your sketches

Nuda.pl - Well, I like the composition and the blue colors. Wing on the left side kind of draws my eyes though.

Claudio Grassi - Really nice sketches!

NickyBeats - Sweet Orange Dragon. Like the runny eyes.

Yajmon - Like the rider sketch/underpainting. (even with the strange proportions)

Bnoch - Fantastic. If it were not for the amount of action in the piece, iŽd say she is falling off. Now it just contributes to the intensity.

Derekdedgell - Way to slap the values down! Can't wait for updates

Dscreet - Brilliant! Reminds me of Rembrant (oh wait, thats me...)

M0uS3r - Nice hunkered down pose. Watercolorfeel

JanJager - Way to turn things on its head! Solid work as per usual!

    Ironbyte - Steampunk Good!

    GEB - !!!

Sean McClain - Nice and Cool. Get a Guarding the pass feel here. Dragons Eye looks too caroony (?), does not fit in with the rest. No connection to DS You can call me Pscreet

    ashess - C

dawnusllaw - Nice Pencilwork! Looks solid

Thought I might share my progress so far. Might not have the time to finish but wanted to show my concept nonetheless. It's a post-apocalyptic dragon rider. Next step is to figure out a good action pose.

So far, Bnoch, Pixeltuner and GEB stand out to me the most right now as the best designs. GammaGrey, you also have a cool start but I really wanna see more of the dragon and rider and how you handle the rest of the design. If it turns out as awesome as that dragon's head then you might have a winner!

I would actually take a look at how birds of prey hold their wings when they're stooping, as the pose of the dragon looks very much like that right now - see this for an example. Right now they look a little awkward, as there's a lot of underside of wing showing when the dragon is doing an extreme downward-pointing pose.

Did a little more work on the main piece, stopped when I realized I kinda needed to know how the rider's armor was put together, stat. It--it kind of shows that I'm way more used to fantasy than sci-fi. But at least I got it done (minus any tweaks I may do), so just have to do the back view. ("Just.")

    ...

Holy wow. Wish I'd gotten the tablet up and running for this. In the meantime... -my- fave dragons come from Michael Whelan (see his complete folio at http://www.glassonion.com/). Some late-night US inspiration for you all? I hope so. Good luck folks!

Eofn - Great topic! I've got a question for you: does the 3/4 part of the dragon need to be visible too?

TheLuvableNerd - I like the Western-style theme with your rider and dragon. Any progress on it so far?

Claudio Grassi - Those are some sick sketches of dragon heads, especially on the layout of the old parchment.

Garkudion - The concept art of your dragon and riders are creative, which are different from most typical dragons.

nuda.pl - Absolutely love your ancient rider and dragon especially with old marks all over them, showing that they had witnessed the eras of time.

    derekdedgell Nicely done.

Bnoch - Your work just blew me away...

Continue - Gotta love your work because your style is different from others. Your progress is shaping up really nicely so I expect it to be solid when you're done with it.

Suneater - Your work definitely shows that you've put in a lot of effort especially diamond-shaped scales all over your rider. If you don't finish it on time for CHOW, you always can work on it later for a showcase.

Sean McClain Are you done with that work? Either way, it looks very impressive. The rider reminded me of the Shredder for some reason.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm forcing myself to finish the entry for CHOW this time unlike last week and the week before that. Here are some updates:

The third work was supposed to be the original piece until I realized that the rider would be tiny on the back of the dragon, making it impossible to have the 3/4 focus visible. I'll finish it up later in my free time.

Worked on the second work and not satisfied with it. Might do another piece soon.

I'm pretty sure at this point I won't have time to finish. I've re-done the wings at least 10 times now. I know how I want to redo them next but I've had enough for now. At least I got the character worked out for the most part.

    Aaah such a nice topic!
    And so many great entries!

I kind of suck at drawing people, so maybe these challenges will force me to improve.
So here's my attempt. Not too dynamic, I know. Just figuring out design.

I will make the rider/salesman more prominent in the composition
This is character of the week after all. . . I'll probably cut off most of the beast from the final image.
And I'm thinking this is not the rider; but a salesman. The future rider will be added, maybe a background
with a sort of medieval fantasy market? I dunno, I might get in over my head then.
