Nice work so far guys! I quite like Eclectix's, system404's, and Cy-AN's stuff at this point.

I'm definitely participating in this one. Basically, my concept is the free-swimming larva of a sessile creature, kind of like a sort of giant space barnacle that sends its offspring hurtling between planets and asteroids. It holds a symbiotic relationship with a number of creatures that it carries along for the trip. Intelligent species may clear out these symbiotic passengers, take their place, and chemically interfere with the host's systems to direct it to their chosen destination.

    First Cow

I've submitted to Chow before but this is my first time submitting a Cow, I've been trying to work on textures more and I figured I should try some different things . not sure if I'm terribly fond of the structure yet, probably tinker with it a lot more but meh, it's a start right.

This alien creature slowly assimilates entire civilizations of other life forms by making them dependent upon it for survival. It slowly enslaves the unwitting host race by improving and replacing their existing technology until they no longer know how to live without it. In the form of helpful symbiotic biotechnology, it mingles itself with the host organisms until there is nothing left of the hosts' original genetic make up or their culture except that which the alien organism deems useful for its own purposes.

This illustration shows one of the interstellar transports which the alien organism can fashion itself into to transport host races from star to star, where it often tricks them into waging war on other cultures. Its typical strategy is to then cause the attacking host race to lose the war it tricked them into fighting. This way the victorious new race takes the alien "biotechnology" as one of the spoils of war, thus allowing it to seamlessly infect a new unsuspecting civilization.

The word ‘anarchy’ comes from the ancient Greek αναρχία in which αν meant ‘without’ and αρχία meant first a military ‘leader’ and then ‘ruler’. Anarchist society is one ‘without rulers’: a classless, non-hierarchical society.

    guys, this topic is tough.

most(all) creatures here are not able to land properly or their transportation-capsule is not protected enough.

Respectfully, I don't think you can make that assumption, Stryke. The same critique could be applied to virtually every sci-fi craft I've ever seen. If you saw a picture of the Apollo rocket and knew nothing more about it, you would not know that it was capable of returning a man safely to Earth- yet it was. Usually on flying craft the landing processes are not readily apparent when not in use, and the capsule protection would likewise not necessarily be clearly visible.

That being said Eclectix, part of the creature design is showing this mechanism in action. While it's all fine and dandy to see the creature hovering in orbit, the methods used to take off and land, as well as the transportation itself are a required component. In other words, you're both right. A shot in space would not necessarily show a landing mechanism, so in order to really come up with a powerful entry, it is necessary to construct some sort of mid-takeoff or landing scene to show all the components of transportation in action (thrust, life support, storage space, landing gear, etc...). Although a lot of the designs right now do not necessarily need to show all of these mechanisms for the purposes of the specific scene, I would argue that for the round, showing them is required for creating a compelling and believable story for the creature.

I think it's quibbling to debate whether it must be shown traveling between planets or landing on one. If I illustrate it landing, then I'm not showing it traveling in space and vice-versa. My spaceship-creature simply lands on the planet; like the Millenium Falcon or the Enterprise, there is nothing remarkable to be shown about it.

i don't think people should worry to much about either, this topic demands a pretty abstract creature, it could very well just morph to accomodate its landing, or it can levitate over the ground or something...try not to think too hard...

Art is not about competing against others and being better than everyone else, but it is about competing against yourself and discovering your greatest potential!

Or you just can assume that it boards creatures on a station in orbit just like 'normal' huge spaceships do in general sci-fi.

That said, I've finally come up with something which accommodates protection, departure (and landing on) from a planet and steering and interstellar travel. Small airbags which convert air (or another atmospheric gas) to something propulsive and 2 huge ones for the space travel. Which only need to be filled once of course because there's no friction in space. Huzza!

Now I've got one day to render the fuck out of it.

Hey guys, looking good so far! I decided to have a little fun with this one...basically this is a Flying Space Frog! They jump high into the atmosphere using there wings to fly beyond the planets gravitational pull. The species has a large fluid filled sack that protects its egg to be laid on the next planet. Passengers are injected into this sack through the nose and rest in suspended animation until they arrive and emerge when the egg is laid.

I don't have time to finish a final but it looked so much fun that i had to do a few sketches. This creature is the queen of a hive of things. She is born "small" and then grows huge, and her body grows harder as well. The ball on her back is both the egg-sack and a container of the gas that lifts her off the ground as she grows. She then rolls them in under herself the day she leaves leaves the ground completely. She flies up until she can't get higher and then she shoots out very long legs that have a soft material between them that then turns hard and are used to push her out of earths orbit using sun-wind. I realize it would take forever to get that speed up, but she has time. Then she closes her eyes and falls into a coma-ish state and goes wherever the sun-wind takes her. The sails also gives energy to the egg-sack during the travel. Then she crashes on a anything and she dies. But the egg-sack then opens up and a new colony of these creatures wake up, and start out by eating the remains of the queen. Among these newborn there's a big number of new queens. Sorry about the amount of text. I just thought it was fun to imagine the life cycle. Any crit would be great!

    Also, awesome work everyone!

Any critique is very welcome! I am here to learn! Thank you!

(lark: just wanna point out you made the deadline the 29th rather than the 28th, I was actually wondering why there wasn't a lot of entries, because I believe a lot of people thought the deadline's tomorrow...
