    ROUND #252: Winged Megamouth

    topic:

    ROUND#252 - Winged Megamouth

This week is another randomly generated topic. It’s been awhile since we’ve gone up in the air with some winged creatures. As for megamouth, in the megamouth shark it keeps its mouth open constantly, filtering out food from water. Your creature need not necessarily have this exact quality, but the mouth should feature prominently in the design, and should be featured open, in the final drawing.

    Requirements this Week:

    - The creature must have functional wings

    - The creature must have it’s mouth as a prominent feature of its design

    - The creature’s mouth must be illustrated open

    Deadline:

    March 21st 9:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

    finals go here... http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=3405679

Never participated in a C.O.W before, I'm in.

And somewhere along the line, she came down with a serious case of dead.

This one looks so cool. I probably won't have time to do another until next month, but damn this week's topic sounds really appealing. I look forward to what everyone comes up with.

I think I'm in much the same state. After my rushed one last week, I'm going to wait until I have less projects so I can really sink myself into the contest. Maybe I'll do a few sketches for funsies.

I always look forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with!

I don't have much time this week either, but I figured I just start straight away and maybe get something done this round.

So here is the first thing that came to mind.
It's supposed to be a megamouths shark like thing, that gobbels up entire clouds and filters any lifeforms in the cloud droplets out for sustenance.
The beast is filled with gas, leaves trails of water and or cloudvapor behind (chemtrails lol) and does swallow the occasional bird or insect that just happens to fly into its mouth.

    Any comments/crits appreciated.

hey everyone! im gonna have a go at this even if its just a few WIPs. my scanner wasnt working so i didnt post my WIPs last week....is there anywhere i can post them? just for the sake of sharing. ok, keep up the good work.
one question: does this creature need to be enormous? or is it enough that his mouth is enormous in proportion to the rest of it body?

    Awesome topic =)

Harmageddon, nice start, i really dig your idea with the gas-filled creature, just keep in mind that it must have functional wings

Pixeltuner, great start, reminded me a bit of the old Gargoyles series=)

Totemiks, i think the creature can have any size.

Some first quick fishy sketches to get started...

Whilst we're at it I may as well post some sketches I've been working on.

    C.O.W. #252. Winged Megamouth - WIPs Thread

Been testing out the idea of creatures based primarily in the sea, so mostly manta rays, whales etc. Also been looking at Tunnel worms and other various fantasy folk with less than gentlemanly maws.

The Sarcastic Fringhead - My main inspiration for the mouth so far.

I have to ask, does fully functioning wings necessarily mean used for propulsion, or can they be used mainly as a form of aerodynamics. See my idea for my flying creature with a rather large bulk; held aloft by air sacs like Harmageddon, (hence some of the sketches) with a ravenous maw for chewing on mountaintops to keep his bouyancy in check with it's primary foodsource being electricty from storms. A bit convoluted I know but I'm hoping it'll turn out alright in the end.

Anyway I'll carry on with it later. Crits so far I'd have to say,

Harmageddon: Liking the design, but I have to agree with Mhugo it feels like the creature is falling down instead of flying, perhaps it's perspective coupled with teeny wings. I'd loveto see what you come up with.

    Pixeltuner
: Nice sketch my only real nagging thought would be the weight campared to the wings, I doubt they could hold up it's bulk and they seem like they're missing a lot of skin

    http://mikey3d.files.wordpress.com/2...edenstrom1.jpg

Your wings remind me of a bats, notice how the skin on them stretches down to the actual legs in order to get as much wind behind it's wings as possible, as well as skin from their hands to their shoulder.

Mhugo: Once again thoroughly impressed with your designs. Have to admit the top one is my current favourite, looking forward to seeing more

Woo my first attempt at a COW. I love these challenges already.

So this is my wip. I am having some trouble with the 'functioning wings'. Because i am no expert but i think that the bigger a creature is, the bigger the wings need to be in proportion to the body, in order to make it fly. Does anyone else know? Anyway i looked at albatros wings and went from there. But if i am right, that means that if my Megamouth is huge then the wings need to be huuuuuuge. Right?

Also i really like the sketches so far!

Nice stuff Chaos I particularly like the bottom left one, as it seems to have the best weight spread of the lot

    C.O.W. #252. Winged Megamouth - WIPs Thread

Another update. Having chosen a style of creature I'm trying to portray it chasing a flying airship of sorts, because it feeds on electricity it has conductors raise on it's back, and I think I've got the wings to work after much hassle.

Tchuk: Yeah they're kind of batwings but I haven't properly looked at ref for how the skin attaches and such

    C.O.W. #252. Winged Megamouth - WIPs Thread

    ^ does this count?

Just kidding. Nice sketches, people. Mhugo, your designs are by far the best so far. If you could merge the mouth from the one on the right with the shape/wings of the one on the bottom I think you would come out with something really REALLY cool.

    Good luck people!

    A few crits...

Harmageddon: Nice start but taking a closer look at your lighting it seems as if the shadows and highlights in the mouth area should be flipped around. I would also recommend toning down the bright pink in the mouth as well. Good luck!

Pixeltuner: Cute creature. Not much to say this early on. My only advice would be to keep an eye on your anatomy.

Mhugo: Awesome sketches. You have an amazing imagination. I really love the bottom design. It's just really different and fun to look at. Can't wait to see which design you go with!

Tchuk: I think this could turn out cool if you watch your values and define your creature a bit more before diving into the paint job.

AdamStolterman: Good luck on your first COW! That's not nessacarely true about the wings having to be huge. You're back story could be that it lives on a planet with low gravity or that it's a winged underwater creature. Worry about getting that "cool" factor down in your design first and then think about the functionality. By the way, cool creature so far!

ChaosTheory: You have some nice ideas going on. Personally I'd like to see you work on the bottom right more. I like the head on him.

ENNEX: I think with this week's topic that the mouth on your creature needs to be exposed to the viewer a bit more. Maybe a more forward facing pose or just twisting its body would help to show more of the mouth. Just a thought, plus there's still plenty of time.

Here's a wip shot of my design so far. Any crits would be welcome!

I'll work some more on my critter tomorrow.
Thanks for the comments/crits so far. You guys are good at this.
Mhugo: thanks! I will think about wings. Actually when I posted it I reread the brief and thought: crap.
I wanted to give it many tiny wings, like musquito wings. So that it would sound like a swarm of musquitos when it flies past.
I will see what I can do.
Tchuck: agreed; I did not think about the "timber!" feel it would convey.
I was more concerned with the beast snaking past, when one would look from an aeroplane.
    I'll think about it. Thanks!
sozo: thanks, I think you are right about the lighting. And the mouth.
That is quite the struggle for me, but I will do what I can (and time permits)

    Some crits/comments

Pixeltuner: nice start! I like the antlers for eyes.
The mouth might even be bigger I think. The colours are great.
Curious to see where you will take this. As sozo said: anatomy. Make it grrreat!
Mhugo: I like your style: very clean, nice drawings. I like the top and right ones the best so far.
Whatever you will go for, I'm sure it will be awesome!
Tchuck: I like the topright and bottomleft ones the most. Curious to see what you will go for. Make it great!
AdamStolterman: Nice design! I like the weird eel like head and the tripod tail.
Wings are proportionally bigger (as with albatross) if the creature is bigger.
Of course, you could also have your creature fly in the thick atmosphere of Zeta IX in the Pegasus cluster of stars,
where gas filled bladders (like in fish) keep them basically buoyant and wings are only needed to change direction.
ChaosTheory: LOL I like the idea of basically just a head with wings. This makes the mouth a very prominent feature in the design
Curious to see which one you will go with. Make it great!
Tchuck: I can see your creature gracing the cover of vogue one day
You might want to make the mouth more prominent in the design though. Now it reads more like the frilled flying thing.
Other than that, I like the energy you convey with your piece.
ENNEX: your creature is also gas-filled I think?
It looks to me as if the light is coming from the background, so the creature in front would be more of a silhouette.
Also you might want to think about how the tentacled arms attach to the body; with muscles?
Are there bones in the tentacled arms?
Other than that, nice design and composition.
sozo: I like it; looks like a sort of flying shrimp I think it needs an even bigger mouth though.
bara: interesting , not much to say about it yet Make it great!

Totemiks: you ask where you can put your WIPs to previous Creature of the Week contests? How about you open a sketchbook?

this is my idea for the crit. poses as a pigeon or something, then gobbles up his real pigeon companions or an eventual predator.

Another update, decided to change the wings and tail to something better resembling a manta ray. As well as englarging the mouth, adding some ferocious extra jaws to the mix and giving it a better decorative headdress. I've also moved the air sacs to behind said headdress and some supporting ones along the underside, it's just a quick thing so please excuse the mess, I'll clean up when I'm happy with a design... maybe I need to add some legs.

    C.O.W. #252. Winged Megamouth - WIPs Thread

    Crits:

    Bara
: Loving this so far, a really interesting jaw and some lovely painting, I'd say have a look at it's left wing because it just feels like it's somewhat limp compared to the one on your beasts right. Also your colours seem a little cool, I'd love to see it with a bit of green or red tinged in the background with the clouds etc, might really make it stand out.

: MUCH better Pixel the wings definitely support it well now and again great painting. Not sure about the eye on the left, feels like it should be less visible, like behind it's brow a bit more than it is currently. Other than that I'm looking forward to seeing the rest

Sozo: Just, wow. Very, very nice. Reminds me of a flying Ultralisk from Starcraft but I can imagine it being a skyfilling horror. I can't wait to see how you continue with this.

OK, it's been a while since I tried one of these, hopefully I'll actually finish this one.

Some nice stuff going on in here already, the first thing that came to my head was a critteresque creature http://imgc.allpostersimages.com/ima...oster-1985.jpg with wings so I was surprised to see so many sea creature influenced creations....I like it

Here is what I got so far

    Here's where I'm up to.

And somewhere along the line, she came down with a serious case of dead.
