ALIEN PORTRAIT #1 "KUSH"... & Spectrum Fantastic Art Live

    Hey guys,

Been almost 3 years since my last art post. So I'm kinda out of the loop. Been busy with concept design jobs but wanted to share something.

My take on the 1950ís classic big head alien in a glass bubble domed space suit. Also included a time lapse video on my blog. Oil on MDF panel 20"x22". This will be one of a few recent oil paintings that will be on view at Spectrum Live, May 18-20, 2012. I'll be sharing a booth with Illustrator/Concept Artist JP Targete. I'll have original oil paintings, prints for sale and maybe a few crude maquettes to show. If you're headed to the convention stop by and say hi.

Really nice texture and design. I did not know you painted traditionally as well, very nice. Good luck at the show!

Don't know why this hasn't gotten more replies. Great piece, and it was super fun to watch the process. I was contemplating making sculpts for reference, and your video may have just sealed the deal for me. Thanks for posting!

Looks like an embryo. Great work on lighting, texture, color, reflectivity, etc. Good job landing a booth with JP Targete, whose name makes me think of all the wonderful concept art that went int Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa.

The quality is awesome, and the character is so cute. But, poor it, no jaw.

Nice concept and colors! I liked the way you rendered his skin, although I think he is frightening for me

Hey guys, wanted to say I appreciate you all taking a moment to comment on my work. I've been under the radar for several years almost always doing some art I can't show or would never want to show. So it's always fun to do something for me.

@ Moon Vision Studio - Hey Jose! Yes I studied with some really great oil painting instructors and portrait artists. I switched to digital because all the cool kids were doing it. How's things with you? Last we spoke I believe you were working for Disney. Been awhile.

@ NuclearWarrior - I don't worry about replies too much as long as I get to share with the community. Good luck with your maquette. I'm no pro sculptor but I try to get good reference before I start.

@ Dahami It's funny, you're the 3rd person to tell me it looks like an embryo. It's funny cuz it kinda does.

I'm working on the next painting in the series now by starting on the next reference sculpt. If anybody out there is interested you can follow along on my blog.

    later and thanks for looking.

Your excellent education and hard work shows, you are certainly a master of both traditional and digital art.

It has been a while. My dept at Disney got cut by about half when the Great Recession hit and I got caught in the wrong half. After a couple of other jobs, I'm now at Universal Studios. As always I'm also trying to pick up the odd freelance gig in order to keep up with the young art prodigies around here!

I'm looking forward to following your blog!
