    Star Spawn of Cthulhu

This is a concept for an illustration of a Star Spawn of Cthulhu. This is not Cthulhu himself, but one of his kin. They are more or less described as an octopus-like race which descended from the stars. If I decide to go with this design, I'll still have some detail and polish work to do on it.

I would like any input that anyone has to offer, but especially would appreciate input from anyone familiar with Cthulhu Mythos as far as whether this comes close to their impression of what the Star Spawn should look like.

Great work! I guess you could make the surroundings darker, in order to make the eyes and face stick more out. And if you want to add more depth to the paitning, you could make those tentacles come closer to the viewer, as well as further away on the backside. Unfortunately I don't know very much about the Cthulhu Mythos.

Isn't the perspective of the background, and the perspective of the star spawn a bit off?

I think that you with the background is trying to hint that you looking up at the star-spawn from below, but the creature itself looks like you are level with it. Or at least that the feeling I get from the lightning on the brightest limbs.

I have no intention of becoming a professional artist, I just aspire to become a really good amateur.

Thanks, w176. I'm trying to make that perspective work but maybe I' m not pushing it enough. Perhaps I need to push the head back, move a tentacle forward or something.

I think what screws up the perspective for me, is where the light is reflected in the tentacles and where is seems to be coming from.

If the light is coming from above, and you looking from it from bwlow, shouldnt the light and shadows fall be more like this?

I see what you mean, thank you for your explanation. I made changes to the lighting and also to the shape of the head, and I am liking this much better.
