    Rich people....

Why does it seem like half the people on this forum own a Cintque, a full version of CS5, an iPad, etc..... where the heck does all this money come from?

Many are working professionals who actually use/need them because it helps them in turn make more money in the long run.

others I imagine either saved up.... .... or... are just rich people.

Most people spend money on coffee, cigs, booze, weed, clothes, TVs and video games.

If you go without those things and use the money on art supplies instead, you'll have a nice tool set.

There's something called working for a living....you seem to be laboring under the fact that everyone who has these items bought them all in one go...Though of course it's a possibility.

The most efficacious way to procuring these goodies? Get good at what you do and reap the rewards.

Also these are our vocational tools.... not that I would ever use an ipad. Those things are worse than useless other than wowing clients with your digital portfolio.

But going in an another tack, would you begrudge a pilot his airplane? A doctor that expensive machine that goes 'Bing'? An engineer his 2 acre testing grounds?

No I dare say you wouldn't.

It's like it's become some kind of forgotten tradition or crazy secret.

I have a Cintiq (Poseur? Moi?). However, I still use Photoshop CS2. I worked with a Cintiq at my old company and fell in love with it. So I worked and I saved and saved and saved, and eventually I bought one, nothing to do with being rich. My experience is that as I work almost exclusively digitally, it speeds up my work flow. Not a luxury, but an essential piece of technology for my chosen method of creating. The whole concept group I worked with fell for them and each now has their own at home, one of them winning theirs in an on-line competition.

It may be the fact that the people you think are so wealthy actually just work hard to get the things that make their life and work environment more comfortable and efficient, seeing as many of the people here are pros at some level or another. No, not all these things are essential, but as you get out there you realise that items like digital methods of displaying your work are just part of 'the process'.

Incidentally, have you ever bought oil paints? Being an artist can be expensive. But being an artist means you put nearly all your disposable income AND profit into your vocation. Some kinds of technology are just part of that, and not luxuries.

I've worked my way up to CS3 and an Intuous 3. Does that make me middle class?
I was once on the receiving end of a critique so savagely nasty, I marched straight out of class to the office and changed my major (sketchbook).

I have a Graphire 1 at work and an Intuos 4 at home-- does that make me a Slumdog Millionaire?

I really crack myself up sometimes.

Digital artists tend to use the first two to do their jobs. :/

Also, see Elwell's post. How do you know what the people on this forum have?

btw, I have a Bamboo fun and an Ipod Touch that was given to me when someone bought the new version of it, which is still really good stuff to have.
