7 Types of Folds in Drapery

    Hey guys,

I've been learning about drapery and I just learned about the 7 different types of fold.

The problem im having is, Its still difficult for me to discern the different folds.

I thought id be cool if different people can upload different examples of types of folds. And add a little commentary, what we should notice, stuff like that.

I think this might be helpful to lots of people here.

It really helps if you can name the folds you mention. There are a number of books that give some classification. Hogarth gives more than 10, Bridgman gives 7, and I'm pretty sure there are more sources...

The folds that I wanted to talk about are..

Spiral, zig zag, diaper, inert, drop, pipe and half lock.

So for example, towards the knee is spiral fold, and toward the ankle is zig zag.

I have to ask. Does diaper folds actually mean the things babies wear, or something else?

Well are you going to start the conversation so where know what direction you want to take it and what specifically you need help with? You'll get a better response that way.

I believe the name references cloth diapers but the folds don't happen exclusively in diapers if that's what you are asking.

If you're having trouble identifying them, look back at the site dpaint posted- its pretty awesome and outlines what causes the folds. If you're looking at a sleeve, for example, you can narrow down the list of 7 to just a couple.

Just keep in mind, if you're designing clothes for a character or something without a reference, the material is very important. Velvet, linen, polyester, wool, silk, etc, will all wrinkle, fold, and bunch differently. They all burn differently, too, but that's a fun adventure for another day.

Oh, and modern clothing frequently has folds built into the garment, so keep that in mind if you're really stumped trying to figure out folds that don't seem to belong. Pickups, ruching, shirring, pintucks, boxpleats, and so on. It's a good time.

Ok. Nah. I was just wondering if there was a meaning of the word I didn't know of, because it sounded a bit wierd.

Diaper fold is a sort of triangular looking fold that's made material sags between two points, iirc. I guess it kind of looks like a diaper, or cloth diapers make that fold a lot or something.

They're talking about cloth diapers not the disposable ones. We probably need a new term for today. Any thoughts guys?

I didn't think it was possible to be called an artist when you have nothing to say. It's like being a writer who publishes individual words as books and expects to be praised for it.

Hey, Can you talk more about pickups, ruching, shirring etc... R they fashion terms? were can I learn about them.. or maybe your can give us a quick tutorial!

Also what I initially wanted was for people to post photos of
clothes, and name the type of fold on the article of clothing. I already posted the jeans and the spiral fold around knees etc..
