I thought I would try and get a start on the character sheets first, I am trying to think as practically as possible, inspiration from the lionfish which is hella poisonous and the really nice looking floaty tailed fish that name escapes me, initial brain fart really

Grotesque, it is. My idea of a siren doesn't necessarily involve rocks. The areas in which my sirens live are filled with sound that above the surface sounds beautiful and below the surface is loud enough to kill. Name: Untitled-1.jpg

Im thinking she lures em in and has tiny venomous spines all over her body which immobilise her prey for the eating, like snakes spiders and a few other animals have, didnt think she needed boobs because she isnt a mamal (well that was the thinking)

I am very excited for this! And especially since I have two weeks to work on this I will have plenty to do this when I'm not working, so thank you CHOW! I don't know if people have been doing their research but the original mythology around sirens were bird-like not mermaids.

    Check the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siren

Just a lil something to think about.

Si_Swe: just finished viewing that myself actually...it's a shame most of the submitted works in the final are not viewable most likely due to image hosting sites who's accounts have expired, or something like that...

Art is not about competing against others and being better than everyone else, but it is about competing against yourself and discovering your greatest potential!

About the one week vs. two week discussion: I'd prefer the two week version. One week can be enough sometimes to get the work done, but if we'd switch to a two week schedule, I could participate all the time

And now time for some crits and such:
PxelSlayer: Good start, I really like the texturework on the skin. I'd say you should think about those spikey appendages a bit. Currently they look kinda random and doesn't really add to the character. Also that tongue looks waaay too large to be beleivable. Keep an eye on that mouth also. It looks cool, but I doubt that she could close it
Yajmon: Nice pose, but I'd highly recommend using a reference here to make it more believable. Taking a photo of a friend can reveal a lot about the possible issues with the pose - and it can also help a lot during polising and detailwork.
BFWs: I'm not sure about this one. The cartoony/stylized approach is okay, but currently it looks a bit flat. I'd try to add some foreshortening here and there by changin the pose a bit. Experimenting some more interesting facial expressions instead of the standard blank face could also add to this character.
Pixeltuner: Now this one looks pretty damn amazing. Hard to find anything to crit here. As I see you're experimenting with pushing the color range a bit, which is definitely a good direction. Maybe changing the color scheme of the skies would add more depth to the pic but I'm really not sure. Keep it up, man!
MnM: Looks a bit confusing at this stage (e.g. I can't figure out what is that other head at the left hand of the siren). Clearing it up is definitely recommended.
Ironbyte: The right one looks the most promising. I'd say keep on working on that.
Dr Motherplaguer: I like the pose, the foreshortening the execution of hands and the brushwork on the scaly part, but the hesitation on the head design is really apparent. I'd say you should sketch up some other versions to see the possibilities. Also don't forget about working on the background. I tend to find really hard to add a fitting background to a fully designed character.
Chaostheory: Too early to say anything specific here. Looking forward to the updates.
TomIllustration: I'd say that the thing that bugs me the most is that on these preliminar sketches she doesn't look too feminine. The head is too small and a bit angular, the shoulders are very wide and that "receeding hairline" and the total lack of breasts also pushes the character in a more masculine direction. Keep that in mind when you continue working on it!
jacobanderson: Promising concept. I'm looking forward to see the detailed design - especially the legs.
prepsage: Nice one! That head design rocks. I also like the color range you use. One crit: the connection between the hip and the tail looks a bit confusing now.
NickyBeats: Woot! Boobies! Haha! Time to put some design elements there, don't you think?
Jager: Nice one so far. I mean ugly one . But how does shw fly? Is this some sort of magic?
lancer idenoure: The pose of the right one looks a bit stiff and flat at this point. Putting some foreshortening there could definitely improve this picture. Also keep in mind that women are not just man with breast. They could be a bit more... curvy maybe?
BagelHero: Looks okay so far, but what is that thing in her hands?
JaneMag: Now this one looks disturbing. Can't wait to see the more polished version. Just one thing: when coloring, don't forget about the background - if you plan to add any. colors look a lot different against white background than against... well, any others.
Rob Powell: The middle row is my favourite, but hard to choose. All of them looks solid.
8smoku8: Nice idea. Would be good to expand the color range too!
ded: Really great and original design. Just keep on working on it, man!

    fail better!"

Usually it's the last thing I do but this time I did the character sheet first. Helpful since I couldn't think of what this character would look like off the top of my head. I'm thinking it might change though, not sure with it.
Also done a quick sketch for the image. Wanted to show how she lures them in.

Novbert, thank you for the useful crit. It makes me to seek for visual inspiration and think about design more carefully.

So, I came up with this idea. Its still obvious, but I simply love this one. Im planning to add some external musles to her cheek, that allows her to use her vertical jaw correctly, because now only horisontal and circular mouth-motion avaliable to her. I realize just right now, when writing this post, think it should work =)

And oooooh, thank you all the CA gods for two weeks challenge!) It gives to such lazy ass like me an opportunity to finish the picture =)
